B Work in small groups. Brainstorm some points that you could make. C

≤044 Two British students are brainstorming ideas before they do this Writing task. Listen and note down the points they make.

D Now look at the composition that one of the students has written. Does it include all the points that he and his partner discussed?

There are different ways to measure success and achievement. Being best at a sport, discovering or inventing something, helping people and even saving a life are all important achievements. Just looking after your family and making them happy is an achievement. However, I think it is true that now too many people believe that success and achievement is about wealth and having things like a big house and a fast car. People think wealth is so important because they see images on TV and in magazines. They

want to be like a film star or famous footballer, and they think everyone else does too. Most people can name hundreds of actors or rock stars, but they do not know the names of doctors or scientists. People know teachers and nurses are important, but they do not think they are really successful. People who work in advertising make money, and so people consider them successful. Of course, there are times when people recognize other kinds of achievement. During the Olympics, for example, athletes are very popular because they win medals, not because they are wealthy. However, people do not remember those athletes for long. They are more interested in footballers, and I think that is because footballers are so rich. The world will be better if more people realize that real success and achievement means being happy and doing things because you want to. I think, though, that the more young people watch TV, read magazines and surf the Internet, the more they will measure success and achievement by wealth and by the material possessions that a person has acquired.

≤045 Listen to the students in Exercise C again. Highlight the points in the composition as you hear them.

F Choose ONE option below about the answer the student has given.

1. He has agreed with the statement and given evidence to say why. 2. He has disagreed with the statement and given examples of why he thinks it is not true. 3. He has balanced his arguments and has neither agreed nor disagreed with the statement.

Writing 3: organizing your points

A Put the stages into the order in which they appear in the composition. ___ Give plenty of evidence that shows why you agree with the statement. ___ Begin the summarizing paragraph with a strongly expressed opinion. ___ Repeat the main idea of the statement and say again that you agree with it. ___ Say that you agree with the statement. ___ Show that you understand the statement – define key words in the statement. ___ Give an example of why some people might not agree with the statement.

Exam tip: However you answer the question, you must organize points logically. The examiner must be able to read your composition easily.

B Go to the Exam Practice Module on page 57 for the Writing task.
