B Copy the table into your notebook. Then add these points to the correct column.

1. The teacher can deal immediately with any difficulties you have. 2. You have to listen to other students making a lot of mistakes. 3. You only have one other person’s opinion in a discussion. 4. You meet new people and make new friends – sometimes from other cultures. 5. One-to-one lessons are very expensive. 6. If you talk in pairs, the teacher can’t always hear what you are saying. 7. The teacher can go through your written work with you and explain the things you don’t understand. 8. You feel nervous because the teacher watches you when you read or do an exercise.

Exam tip: If you do not have a strong opinion about a topic or you see both sides of an argument, you should write a balanced composition. Brainstorm points that support both sides of an argument and then organize them.

C Look at these two compositions. Which one do you prefer? A

People want to learn one-to-one because the teacher can give them all his attention. In a group, the teacher must give his attention to all the students, and it takes too long. If you have a one-to-one lesson, you can tell the teacher what you want to study, but if you study in a group, you must do what other students choose to do. In a group, you must also listen to mistakes other students make, and in a one-to-one, you don’t have to. If you have a one-to-one class, the teacher can listen to everything you say and correct your pronunciation and the mistakes you make. In a bigger class, the teacher cannot listen to everything that everyone says and so does not hear mistakes. If you study in a group, you can meet lots of people and make new friends, but in a one-to-one you will not meet anyone but the teacher. In a bigger class, you can play games and lessons are more fun, but in a one-to–one class, lessons are boring and intensive. Learning in a group is better for some students and learning in a one- to-one class is better for others.

B These days, it is a big advantage to speak another language, and English is probably the

most useful. Students at university are learning English, and children are learning English earlier at school. Companies want people who work for them to speak good English. Most students learn English in a group. There is one teacher and anything from ten to

thirty students. However, some people think you learn more quickly and make better progress if you have a one-to-one class and the teacher gives you all of his or her attention. Of course,

teacher can deal with your difficulties immediately. The teacher can listen to everything you say and correct the mistakes you make. He or she can look at your written work with you and explain what you do not understand. Most importantly, you can tell the teacher what you want to learn in the lesson and ask to revise something. You don’t have to do what other students choose, and you don’t have to listen to their mistakes. On the other hand,

learning one-to-one is intensive, and in a discussion you only have the

opinion of one other person. In a group, there are more people to share ideas with. You can play games and have fun in class. When I was studying in London, I met interesting people from many other countries. I learnt about other cultures and made new friends. If you have plenty of time to learn a language,

If, however, you need to learn quickly, one-to-one lessons might be best. Remember, though, that one-to-one lessons are very expensive!
