Just to let you know, I have given half marks for questions 20–25 on the writing paper. I wasn’t sure if this was OK, but I felt that it was the right thing to do. I know that not all markers have done the same, but I don’t suppose that matters.


Can we possibly meet sometime to talk about the grading criteria for the essay? I can’t really see the difference between bands 50–59 and 60–69. One refers to a ‘very good’ use of grammar and the other to an ‘excellent’ use of grammar. What’s the difference?


For questions 17–19, there are short answer responses and I don’t see how the essay grading criteria can be used for these as they’re not essay responses. There are fi ve marks for each question. Simon has shared his approach with me. Can I follow that too?


I thought I’d let you know that I showed some of my scripts to Dr Simmonds from Psychology and he was quite surprised about how we interpret the faculty grading criteria in the EAP context. I think you’ll be getting an email.


Question 26 requires students to describe a graph. The total mark is out of nine. The marking notes say to mark this question in a similar way to popular external tests which also use a maximum score of nine. Do you have any tips as I haven’t marked any of these external tests before?

I know you spent hours putting together the key for the multiple-choice questions last week, but I don’t quite agree with some of the correct answers. I think some of the others are just marking exactly according to the key, but when you read some alternative responses some of them don’t seem incorrect. What would you recommend?
