Extension activities
The following extension activities can be exploited by colleagues who have additional time to explore and develop the strategies and principles introduced in this chapter.
» Identify an area within your own EAP assessment that you would like to explore further. Use the cycle in Figure 2 to help you to outline what you
hope to explore.
» Consider the framework provided in Table 1, which can provide additional structure to the possible research project into EAP assessment which you
have identified above.
» What is the context of your research? » What are your research objectives? » What would your research questions be? » Which hypothesis might you seek to support or refute?
» Plan an assessment-focused collaborative activity which involves working with colleagues from other academic fields that you feel might inform your
own EAP assessment. Consider the modules or courses that you are teaching, the needs of your students and any gaps in your knowledge regarding how EAP is used in the target domains in which your other academic colleagues work.
» As colleagues at other institutions are very likely experiencing similar challenges to you, why not instigate a collaborative research project, however
big or small, that involves working jointly on an aspect of EAP assessment or which shares good practice in a particular area?
» If you haven’t already had the opportunity to do this, why not introduce EAP assessment into a departmental discussion forum, as a means of stimulating
colleagues’ interest? Try to make the resources that you focus on as accessible as possible by concentrating on what is relevant to your own working context. If you are able to gain the support of another colleague, it could help in the process of understanding and describing the relevance of any more technical resources that you present.
