Extension activities


The following extension activities can be exploited by colleagues who have additional time to explore and develop the strategies and principles introduced in this chapter.


» Adapt one of your EAP test specifications by adding in further details regarding the features of texts which are appropriate for the assessment that


you are creating. You could refer to features such as text length, text source or genre, along with other features such as Flesch–Kincaid readability level or frequency of vocabulary for relevant levels within academic word lists.


» Work with at least one other colleague and review a number of versions of one test and compare and contrast the different texts which were used. Try


to determine whether the texts are equally fit for purpose or whether some of the texts are better than others. You can then use this information again to define more clearly which texts are appropriate for use in future.


» Consider the extent to which the texts you have selected for assessment purposes are suitably representative of the academic domains that they are


intended to reflect. Which features of the text lead you to believe that the text choice is appropriate?


» Consider how you source the materials that you use for either reading or audio/video texts and identify guidelines or recommendations that can


provide a consistent and more reliable approach in your department.


» Work as a team to update your departmental policy on the usage of texts and the balance of concern for construct validity, authenticity and face


validity. You could then hold a staff CPD session to share this information with colleagues.
