Extension activities
The following extension activities can be exploited by colleagues who have additional time to explore and develop the strategies and principles introduced in this chapter.
» With a group of colleagues, undertake an audit of the EAP tests and assessments that you are involved with and check whether you really are
using the right kind of EAP test for the purposes that the test is required for. You can start by trying to identify what the true purpose of a particular assessment is and consider whether the type of assessment that you have currently devised really aligns with the purpose or function that the test is set to achieve. You might find that a tool which you are using for EAP diagnostic purposes is actually more suitable for proficiency assessment.
» In order that test takers and other users of your EAP tests are aware of what the test’s purposes are – before, during and after taking a test, it is useful
to consider any support information that you provide which describes the test – and the functions which it is designed to achieve. In these documents, which can be made available to stakeholders on your website or in hard copy form, you can explain which purposes the assessment is designed for and, importantly, how the test and its results should not be used. This can help stakeholders to understand EAP tests better and, in some cases, avoid misinterpretations of EAP test results.
» It is sometimes the case that when we become familiar with one particular approach to assessment, we may be reluctant to explore other options.
Revisit Table 4 and consider whether you could integrate and trial some different approaches in your EAP assessment. For example, you may have always used discrete-point tests to assess academic writing and reading separately. If this is the case, you might like to try the integrated approach to see if this yields different results.
» Try to embed tuition regarding the aims and objectives of your assessments into the curriculum so that EAP students feel confident and aware about
why they are being assessed and what that assessment is seeking to measure. Likewise, try to manage the understanding and expectations of other colleagues across your institution or other people who will use your test results. In some cases, you may be able to meet colleagues to explain what your tests seek to achieve and what their limitations are.
