Extension activities


The following extension activities can be exploited by colleagues who have additional time to explore and develop the strategies and principles introduced in this chapter.


» Take a section from one of your existing EAP assessments and explore the manner in which you have operationalized the constructs or EAP skills that


you are seeking to measure. Ask yourself what evidence you have that these representations of EAP constructs accurately reflect the target domain and, where possible, seek to find evidence from the target domain to support your representation of these EAP constructs. If you can’t find this evidence, consider using the information that you have uncovered during this process to rework the constructs within your syllabus and its assessment.


» Work with another colleague from your EAP department and exchange EAP assessments. Review the learning and assessment outcomes which relate to the


assessments and consider the extent to which the assessment you are reviewing accurately samples and represents the learning requirements or target EAP usage in the domain which the EAP students are preparing to study.


» What are the strengths of your current assessment outcomes? » Which intended learning or assessment outcomes need to be revised?


» How could the target domain be sampled more effectively for this purpose?


» How could other colleagues assist with this process?


» Look back at Figure 2, which provides some of the suggested mechanisms for sampling the academic domains which relate to your own EAP


assessment. Identify one of your assessments which you feel could benefit from enhancement and consider how you could deploy three of the techniques in Figure 2 to improve your assessment before its next delivery. Devise a structured action plan so that you have enough time to gather the information that you need and so that this information can be used for the redesign of your assessment.
