We pop the cork on the trend for home bars and wine storage, examine why this market is growing, take a look at some of the latest innovations and ask how retailers can benefit from this popular category. Francesca Seden reports

home bars and wine storage is at the more fun end of the spectrum. As people were confined to their homes during lockdowns and pubs remained closed, many homeowners focused on DIY projects and perhaps most popular among these were the home bar. Now, with the cost-of-living crisis hitting the UK, and some pubs forced to close because of rocketing energy costs, we are even more glad of our home socialising set-ups. “The cost-of-living crisis has led to a decline in discretionary spending,” explains Danny Lay, MD at Caple. “But, it’s clear that wine connoisseurs

here are lots of trends that have been accelerated by the

pandemic. However,

still want to keep their collections in optimum conditions.

“Home bars are also more affordable than nights out and we expect that trend to continue as people look for more ways to save money during these tough times.” Research carried out by Häfele last

year with 2,000 consumers “proved our homes are becoming increasingly multifunctional”. While people use their homes for

everything from relaxation and remote working, to exercising and hobbies like art and baking, a quarter of people said socialising and entertaining is one of their favourite things to use their property for, the research found. Häfele UK head of marketing Natalie

As part of our research, of the people who currently have a wine cooler, 65% find it useful; of those who don’t have one, 37% want one in their home in the future.”

She notes that although the trend is

motivated by the pandemic, modern appliances and great-looking storage have long been highly sought- after to create Pinterest and Insta- gram-worthy kitchens that get the seal of approval from social media followers. “Whether it’s the latest wine chiller

on the market, or a custom-built wine storage area – like creating a whole wine cellar under the stairs – a space can be transformed from simply looking good to being something that is truly aspirational, that its owners can be proud of.” Salice’s UK branch manager Walter Gosling goes on to note that of the 2021 UK wine consumption of 13.9 million litres, 53% was bought online, overwhelmingly in

single or multiple

case quantities rather than single bottles. Additionally, most super- markets offer quantity discounts. “It follows that some means of storage is required,” he says.
