Anthony Sant | THE KBBREVIEW INTERVIEW

The AO plastics recycling plant

Q: And you clearly see recycling as the difference. What makes it so compelling? A: I think sometimes people often lose sight of the fact that old electrical appliances are hazardous. Fridges, as an example, contain some very harmful gases and all of them need to be dealt with responsibly. So, these items need to be taken away using a certified logistics business and then brought back through the network carefully and securely to the recycling plant. This is important but of course AO then goes the next step, we’re now taking an old fridge from the consumer’s home and taking it back to Bertha. The mixed plastic that comes out of Bertha goes into our plastic plant where it is sorted back to single polymers to such a high standard that it can go back to manufacturers like Beko to make new fridges and, guess what, under the WEEE regulations

they

will have to come back through the network in the same way. So we genuinely close the loop on this whole

recycling

journey but

of the logistics important and thing

about it is that we’re the same price as everybody else.

through the multiples. Around 25% of all MDA is sold in this area and that’s certainly a space that AO wants to be in. But genuinely, I want people to work with AO because they really understand the benefits. If people just want to buy a box with a washing

with a washing

machine in it then there’s actually not an awful lot to differentiate ourselves from anybody else. We do have quite a lot of fair-weather customers

in the kitchen retail

market, which is fine of course, and we are always there when they’ve been let down by someone else. We

do see a huge opportunity here but, and this is important, it’s not just copying how the market currently operates. If people just want to buy boxes from us, we’re not that much different, but when you start looking at the bigger picture it’s a distinct proposition.

Q: That’s an amazing example of a circular economy, but why is it important to kitchen retailers? A: We are on a journey, and I can see the direction of travel. The whole premise

of ‘polluter pays’ is

genuinely legislation that currently stands at this present moment -

etail market is opportunity”
