RETAILER PROFILE | Bold Kitchens

‘We won’t let customers down’

Matt Turton started Bold Kitchens in South Hiendley five years ago and based it on giving people what they want. Simon King finds out more

M 37 years’

att Turton went into kitchen retailing with his eyes open. He has experience

in the

industry and knows which way is up, having previously been the northern business manager for The Kitchen Bathroom Buying Group (KBBG) and before that a national account manager for appliance brand Whirlpool. Although after five years’ trading, he gets a lot of customers through word of mouth, he says he also picks up a lot of business as a result of some kitchen studios apparently not wanting to give people what they want.

A basic principle underlying his business is, as he tells kbbreview: “I won’t let customers down.” In fact, to help him deliver on that promise he decided to deal with the fewest number of companies possible. “I find it incredible that we’ll order something weeks and weeks in advance, yet it doesn’t arrive in the expected window. So in some circumstances, I’ll order it online so I can get it, and take the hit. I took a hit of about £30 on a tap, but in the grand scheme of things it’s not a huge amount, but you shouldn’t have to do it. What I don’t want to say to customers is that for the kitchen they

ordered 12 weeks ago, the taps haven’t turned up.”

When it comes to brands for the 1,000sq ft showroom, Turton chose three furniture

manufacturers –

Ballerina, Nobilia and Symphony. He first encountered Nobilia when he was working for Der Kreis – the owner of the KBBG – and he visited the factory in Germany. It was at that time that his wife Tracey first suggested that they should think about starting their own business. Symphony, which is just four miles from Bold Kitchens, is the retailer’s newest furniture supplier and Turton says

that he visited Symphony’s

marketing suite numerous times when he was at Electrolux.

“I know Symphony is a good product and I want the business to partner with companies that have a similar outlook to me. I want to provide a good service, get a good reputation and do a decent kitchen for customers.
