HEALTHCARE ESTATES
Professor Cath Noakes OBE, Professor of Environmental Engineering for Buildings at the University of Leeds, will discuss ‘PROTECT’ – a COVID-19 National Core Study. A Chartered Mechanical Engineer, Prof. Noakes has a background in fluid dynamics, and significant expertise in ventilation and indoor air quality. Her research group conducts experimental and modelling-based studies with a strong focus on ventilation – including exploring the transport of airborne pathogens, and the effectiveness of engineering approaches to controlling infectious disease transmission. An investigator on multiple projects, she has written over 100 peer-reviewed papers, and co-authored design guidance for CIBSE and the Department of Health. Also Deputy Director of the Leeds Institute of Fluid Dynamics, she has, since April 2020, led a UK SAGE sub-group focusing on the science underpinning COVID-19 transmission.
Improving supply chain engagement The importance of hospital planners and designers involving the engineering and manufacturing supply chain early on in healthcare construction projects will be the focus of a Day Two afternoon presentation by Grant Mills, Professor of Healthcare Infrastructure Delivery, Dr Anne Symons, Senior Research Fellow in Healthcare Design, and Raed Ashour, Researcher, at The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction in London, in the day’s ‘Future Requirements’ stream. In the same stream, IHEEM-registered Authorising Engineer, Richard Knight, of Richard Knight Consultancy, will discuss ‘Providing a Safe Environment for Operating on Non-Infectious and Infectious Patients’, and Martina Cardi of Bryden Wood – an architect specialising in healthcare – who led the team for Circle Birmingham Hospital and Rehabilitation (Centre), will address ‘Delivering New Hospitals Fit for an Uncertain Future’.
Day Three
The third day, headlined ‘Science & Innovation’ will start with a keynote in which four specialists in the field from different backgrounds will discuss ‘Infection Resilience Environments’. The session will be chaired by IHEEM President, Paul Fenton MBE; on the panel will be Professor Cath Noakes of the University of Leeds, Andrew Poplett, Chair of IHEEM’s Ventilation Technical Platform, Dr Shaun Fitzgerald OBE, Director of the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge, and Prof. Peter Guthrie, Professor of Engineering for Sustainable Development at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. Dr Shaun Fitzgerald was also the co-founder and CEO at Breathing Buildings, a company that developed from his extensive

research into natural ventilation. Since 2000 his research has focused on energy reduction through understanding and developing natural ventilation solutions for buildings. Prior to joining the Centre for Climate Repair, he was Director of the Royal Institution, overseeing the programme for engaging the public with science and engineering.
Civil engineer with geotechnical background A civil engineer with geotechnical specialisation by background, Professor Peter Guthrie has worked in countries such as Nigeria, Lesotho, Sudan, the Philippines, Ethiopia, and Botswana, as well as on major infrastructure projects such as London 2012, Orange County Great Park (California), the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, CrossRail, the West Coast Mainline Route Modernisation, and Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester Airports, and major building projects such as Eden Project Phase 4. The UK’s first Professor in Engineering for Sustainable Development, his research focuses on the assessment of large-scale projects for sustainability and energy efficiency in buildings. Presenting in the Day Three ‘Research’ stream, Louise Shepherd, CEO, and David Powell, Development Director, at the famous Liverpool children’s hospital, will discuss ‘Innovation in the New Alder Hey Children’s Hospital’. Having joined Alder Hey as Chief Executive in March 2008, Louise Shepherd has since led it through a major transformation into Europe’s only Children’s Health Park, ‘designed by and for children and young people’. The Park comprises a specialist children’s hospital, a dedicated Research Institute in partnership with four Universities, an NIHR Paediatric Clinical Research Facility, an Innovation Hub, and a family support and bereavement centre. Co-presenter, David Powell, joined Alder Hey as Development Director in December 2012, has over 30 years’ experience working in the NHS, and, prior to his current role, held Development Director posts in Bristol and London overseeing new hospital programmes. Also presenting in the ‘Research’ stream – on ‘Safe, Sustainable Operating Theatre Design in a Modern NHS', will be Rabiya Zia, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Architecture at the University of Cambridge working in
multidisciplinary science. With a diverse scientific background in translational medicine, a BSc in Biomedical Science, a MSc in Virology, and a PhD in Metabolomics from Imperial College London, plus significant nursing experience, she is working with the Department of Medicine and the BP Institute at the University of Cambridge to develop ‘safer, sustainable operating theatre designs for modern hospitals.’
New technologies
Presentations on ‘New Technologies’ will run throughout the ‘Science & Innovation’- themed Day Three conference programme, with those presenting including electrical contractors, TClarke, automatic door and window specialist, GEZE UK, hospital wastewater purification system supplier, Pharmafilter, and designer and manufacturer of UVC disinfection equipment, 3H Technologies. A ‘Case Studies’ stream will include presentations on ‘Wayfinding+, The Art of Better Orientation’, from Martin Jones of arts charity and consultancy, Art in Site; ‘Creating Community Spaces for Patient Wellbeing’, by Alison Davies and Paul Cross of NHS Property Services, and a joint look at ‘Transforming Community Health Services Whilst Retaining Services on Site’ from Matt Tebbatt of multidisciplinary design company, One Creative Environments, and Mark Jones, Associate Director, Operations, Strategic Estates & Capital Planning, at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust. The fourth Day Three stream will focus on IHEEM’s Technical Platforms, beginning with a look at HTM 03-01 (2021) – Update and Overview of Major Changes, by IHEEM Ventilation Technical Platform Chair, Andrew Poplett. Thereafter representatives from other Technical Platforms will present, on topics including ‘zero Carbon’ electrical infrastructure, and fire safety.
Day Four
The Day Four conference programme will be headlined ‘Workforce’, with the four streams entitled ‘Looking After Our People’, ‘Belonging’, ‘New Ways of Working’, and ‘Growing for the Future’. The content will reflect the increasing importance being afforded to staff health and wellbeing, new ways of working, and attracting, retaining, and training staff, plus
