WATER SYSTEM SAFETY

Specifying safe washrooms post-COVID restrictions

Although facemasks and social distancing restrictions have eased, COVID-19 is here to stay, and has changed our approach to hygiene forever. The importance of being prepared – especially when it concerns the safety of people – has never been so apparent. For healthcare procurement and specification professionals it has never been satisfactory to take a ‘surface’ approach; it’s about building from the ground up, with safe, robust, and reliable solutions. Bristan has over 40 years’ experience of supplying taps and showers to high-usage hospital environments. Here, Product manager, Chris Tranter, shares his top tips for specifying safe bathrooms.

Two years ago, NHS England and NHS improvement were focused on infection control – through the publication of their national hand hygiene policy in 2019. Today, the need for effective handwashing techniques in healthcare settings and beyond is more important than ever. While creating best practice guidelines is a key element of delivering effective infection control, it all starts with choosing the right products. At Bristan, we understand how quickly contagions like the coronavirus can spread between people through contact with infected surfaces. That’s why we have created our infrared sensor taps – a touchless solution to handwashing. The innovative infrared technology supports infection control as users aren’t required to touch the tap surface to operate it. Instead, they only need to have their hands close to the tap for them to trigger the water flow. This enables people to wash their hands without indirectly encountering harmful germs or bacteria.

Infrared options

We have an extensive range of infrared taps to suit all briefs and budgets. Users can choose from the soft lines of the IRBS1-CP Infrared Swan Neck Basin Tap, the modern, angular IRBS3-CP Infrared Automatic Basin Spout, and the IRWS1-CP Infrared Automatic Basin Wall Spout Tap. All of our infrared sensor taps are limited to 5 L/min maximum flow with automatic cut-off, and are thus BREEAM compliant and ‘anti-vandal’. They are all available with both battery and mains powered options in one box.

The OPAC TMV3 commercial shower has a filter change incorporated into the elbows, ‘for easy cleaning and replacement’.

For a fully integrated, hygienic washroom, the Bristan IRSD1-CP Automatic Soap Dispenser is now available to purchase with the same infrared technology as our taps. The lack of human touch means that our infrared taps and soap dispensers are also less prone to soiling, making them ‘easy maintenance’, as less time is spent on cleaning.

The H64 range of taps includes a patented integral flush system, to support infection control.

Anti-Legionella solutions Effective maintenance and servicing of washroom products is critical in reducing waterborne infections. Poorly maintained water products can result in Legionella, a harmful bacterium that can grow and multiply very quickly within stagnant water systems. If users become exposed to these bacteria, they are at risk of developing Legionnaire’s disease – an infection that can be potentially fatal in vulnerable or elderly populations. Our customer-inspired healthcare ranges have been developed in close collaboration with healthcare managers and specifying professionals. As a result, users can rest

assured that these really simple and safe solutions will minimise the risk of Legionella in healthcare environments. Our popular OPAC TMV3 shower range is designed for easy infection control, and supports anti-Legionella regimes with its patented built-in thermal flush mechanism. The brilliantly engineered flush system prevents the water from becoming stagnant, and therefore reduces the likelihood of bacteria building up. The Bristan OPAC TMV3 commercial shower has a filter change incorporated into the elbows, for easy cleaning and replacement, while for guaranteed user safety, every product in the range achieves TMV3 compliance, offering the highest level of protection against scalding from hot water. Our H64 range of taps, meanwhile, includes a patented integral flush system, to support infection control.
