Suicide prevention video aimed at construction workers

With almost 500 construction workers taking their own lives annually in the UK and Ireland, a wordless, emotive video was released as a free resource to highlight the issue and provide guidance for anybody affected, ahead of 10 September, which was World Suicide Prevention Day.

Film-makers, AKT Productions, worked with Ambanja Films to create the hard- hitting film, which depicts a man ‘on the edge’ thinking of taking his life. Major contractor, BAM, provided a construction site in London's Whitechapel as the location, and the project is supported by the Lighthouse Club charity, which provides emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing support to construction workers and their families. The film, called ‘On the Edge’, aims to enable and encourage those affected to talk about what they are feeling. BAM says research has established that almost half of UK tradespeople experience mental health problems due to work, while stress, anxiety, and depression, account for a fifth of all

New pathology laboratory in Leeds a step closer

A new pathology laboratory at Leeds’ St James’s Hospital, serving the city and hospitals across West Yorkshire and Harrogate, has come a step closer after the demolition of old buildings to prepare for the development. The site has now been handed back to Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust by demolition contractors, Connell Brothers. Designed for fast, accurate, routine and specialist testing, the laboratory will support hospitals across the region to improve diagnostics and help meet growing regional demand for specialist treatment. Earlier this year Leeds-based BAM Construction was appointed design and build contractor following a competitive process under ProCure22. It is hoped to have the new facility completed in 2023. The Trust’s post-COVID recovery plan for patient services includes a focus in the histopathology laboratory on delivering faster cancer diagnoses, ‘world-leading digital pathology innovation’, developing automation to support quicker testing, and bringing together sample reception processes.

work-related illness. BAM Construction director, Ewen Hunter, who approached AKT, said: “It was just a ‘good timing’ moment, because AKT had the skillset, ideas, and same desire to raise this powerful but sensitive subject, so we were more than happy to help it develop the script and provide the film location. “Although the film and subject are sensitive and distressing, our industry has one of the highest death rates, so to be able to be involved in creating this film matters a great deal to many people. I know it will prompt some very valuable conversations. It may even save lives.” The video can be played at: https://vimeo.com/597358738

Acquisition will broaden Wernick’s manufacturing capability

Modular construction specialist, Wernick, says its acquisition of modular manufacturer and hire firm, AVDanzer, will give it additional manufacturing capabilities and increase its fleet, with more than 2,000 additional cabins and modular bays.

Manchester-based AVDanzer, also known as Danzer, supplies modular buildings for sale or for hire, and has a long history of catering to some of the UK’s major infrastructure and development projects, including the London Power Tunnels Project, and the nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in Somerset. It also provides buildings for hospitals, schools, offices, laboratories, sports facilities, ‘and more’.

Wernick Group Chairman, David Wernick, said : “We have strong admiration for Danzer’s manufacturing capability and products, and after initial discussion it quickly became apparent that both family-owned businesses share the same values. We are delighted to welcome the Danzer team to the family, and look forward to sharing ideas and growing the business further.”

The next stage of the laboratory project is staff and stakeholder engagement on the designs; the Trust expects to submit a Full Business Case by the year-end, and hopes to begin construction shortly after.

The new facility will allow the Trust to incorporate some of the services currently housed in the Old Medical School at Leeds General Infirmary. Most of these, and some delivered from St James’s University Hospital, will be incorporated. It will also enable it to release old estate at the LGI for potential development to benefit Leeds in the future as part of an Innovation District in the city centre. This could bring economic benefits for the city and wider region of up to £11.2 bn in net present value terms, and create over 3,000 jobs.

Director at AVDanzer, Dan Holloway, added: “We pride ourselves on being agile and innovative to adapt to new market conditions; the COVID pandemic has really driven the demand for high-quality, innovative accommodation and offices, and our team has kept us at the forefront of developments in our sector. We are pleased to join forces with a business with a similar history and ethos. With the combination of Wernick and our team of experts, we are confident this transaction will boost our capabilities to offer even more flexible solutions to both new and long-standing clients.”
