HOSPITAL DESIGN

Dr Phil Wood, the Trust’s Chief Medical Officer, said: “Our challenging brief to designers was to create new hospitals that bring together the best clinical design solutions for staff and patients, with the creation of a landmark public building of real architectural quality.”

One such young designer who shared her views on how the new children’s hospital should look was 16-year-old Isabelle Plowman, who was the winner of the Daring Designers competition for her age category. Isabelle’s design included safe, calm, communal outdoor spaces that can be enjoyed by patients and their families. Former Leeds and Liverpool football star, Dominic Matteo – who received life-saving treatment at Leeds General Infirmary for a brain tumour in 2019 – was also in attendance at the unveiling of the plans. He said: “From my point of view the care at the hospital is second to none. I can’t praise the hospital

enough. It was absolutely amazing from top to bottom. Everyone was so friendly and compassionate, and made me feel at ease, and I’m really pleased that, along with excellent new facilities for patients, there’s also an emphasis on staff well- being in the new designs.”

Dr Phil Wood, Chief Medical Officer at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, feels that BDP has come up with an exciting design. He said: “Our challenging brief to designers was to create new hospitals that bring together the best clinical design solutions for staff and patients, with the creation of a landmark public building of real architectural quality. All through this process we have involved those who know our hospitals best – our patients, clinicians, and healthcare staff who work there every day – and we’ll be

engaging with them again as we move towards our final design plan. “The fantastic new concept design solution remains at a concept level, and will be subject to ongoing detailed design development through patient, family, and staff engagement during the next 12-18 months as the final design details of the new hospitals for Leeds are finalised.”

Redevelopment potential The Trust says that the old Leeds General Infirmary site could be redeveloped to form a key part of the City’s Innovation District, and encourage increased research and innovation around health technologies, while bringing inward investment into the city.
