INSIGHT US CASINO OPERATORS

Into the Woods Foxwoods Resort Casino

As the largest resort casino in North America, Foxwoods offers a vast array of gaming in seven casinos. Owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation it is one of the highest revenue contributors and largest employers in Connecticut.

G3 discusses with Foxwoods a range of subjects from casino licensing, to its most innovative gaming products, the incorporation of additional amenities and facilities and how it grew from a bingo hall with 50 employees in 1986 to its present spot as the premier resort destination in the Northeast.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is a federally recognised Indian tribe located at one of the oldest reservations in existence, Mashantucket, in Southeastern Connecticut. What’s the history of the Mashantucket (Western) Pequot Tribal Nation?

As pioneers of the Indian casino gaming industry, the Mashantucket Pequot’s’ history reveals one of America’s greatest come-back stories, featured at the Tribe’s world-renowned Mashantucket Pequot

Museum. Today, the Tribe owns and operates one of the largest and most celebrated gaming resort destinations in North America, Foxwoods Resort Casino, along with a variety of complementary businesses including a world-class golf course, a luxury spa, and Pequot Health Care (PHC).

Could you tell us more about the history of the casino and how the casino came into being?

What is now Foxwoods started with just a 1,200-seat bingo hall with 50 employees back in 1986. Te property started offering table games in 1992 and hasn’t closed its doors since.

From there, Foxwoods continued to grow year after year to accommodate the 24/7 crowds, starting with a massive expansion

in 1993 and the additions of hotels, restaurants, more gaming space and eventually all of the amazing offerings we have here today.

The Tribal Government oversees and regulates gaming. How is the casino licensed? What conditions had to be met in order to receive regulatory approval?

In a landmark agreement in 1993, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation agreed to pay 25 per cent of their slot revenue in the state of Connecticut in order to proceed with developing the casino. Since then, Foxwoods has contributed over $4 billion to the state.

How has the casino benefited the local community and the state in terms of generating income as well as other fundraising projects?
