P22 NEWSWIRE / INTERACTIVE / MARKET DATA Stateside Mass Casino Closures
Casinos across America confirm closures in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus
Last month, casinos in America too unprecedented steps to halt the spread of Covid-19. Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak closed all nonessential businesses, including casinos, with every gaming device at the state’s 440 licensed casinos turned off for at least a month as the state aims to thwart the spread of coronavirus - some 200,000 machines.
Te AGA’s Bill Miller spelt out the scale of the shutdown, stating that nearly all—980 of 989— commercial and tribal casino properties have now shuttered their doors. Tese closed casinos directly employ 650,000 employees, who are prevented from working because of the important health and safety decisions made by tribal and state governments. In total, these mass closures will rob the U.S. economy of $43.5bn in economic activity if American casinos remain closed for two months.
Nevada Governor Sisolak said: “Tey have advised that the most effective course of action is to direct all Nevadans to stay home and for all nonessential businesses to close to the public. In consultation with Gaming Control Board Chair Sandra Douglass-Morgan, all gaming machines, devices, tables, games, and any

TransAct Technologies has entered into a new US$10m asset based revolving credit facility, replacing the company’s existing $20m credit facility. Te new facility bears an interest rate equal to the greatest of the prime rate plus 1.75 per cent, the federal funds rate plus 2.25 per cent, or 6.50 per cent, and expires in March 2023. Tis capital will allow TransAct to rapidly ramp up the Food Service Technology division with additional sales, technical, and marketing staff in support of the BOHA! rollout.
“Te closing of our new $10 million credit facility will give us the needed flexibility to quickly and efficiently pursue the extremely large opportunity our Food Service Technology division provides the company,” said Bart Shuldman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TransAct.
equipment related to gaming activity must be shut down. Restaurants and bars located within gaming properties will be subject to the same restrictions as those outlined above.”
Te move from Sisolak mirrors those by governors right across the States. Atlantic City’s nine casinos joined the near global closure of the casino sector in an attempt to halt the spread of the COVID-19 virus. It came as part of Executive Order No. 104, signed by Governor Phil Murphy, implementing aggressive social distancing measures to mitigate further spread of COVID-19 in New Jersey. Te Executive Order indefinitely closes all public and private preschool, elementary and secondary schools, and institutions of higher education, as well as closes all casinos, racetracks, gyms, movie theaters, and performing arts centers.
“In order to slow the spread of COVID-19, we must take aggressive and direct social distancing action to curtail non-essential activities in the state,” said Governor Murphy. “Our paramount priority is to ‘flatten the curve’ of new cases, so we do not overwhelm our care system and overload our health professionals who are on the frontlines of the response.”
US Massachusetts temporarily closes three casinos
Mid-March, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted unanimously to temporarily suspend operation at the state’s three properties, including Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino.
In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the decision was made in collaboration and cooperation with our licensees to safeguard the health and well-being of casino guests, employees, and regulators.
Elaine Driscoll, Director of Communications, said: "As we all continue to navigate this unprecedented and rapidly evolving situation, our agency and our licensees will remain in close consultation with public health authorities and government officials to determine safe protocols for resuming operation. As we develop the appropriate
course of action, we will keep you informed of next steps. Tis decision will be re-assessed in two weeks, while an orderly shutdown process is actively underway. Te gaming floor was close to patrons at 5:59am on March 15, 2020.
"We are all doing our best to appropriately and thoughtfully respond to this highly complex and unprecedented set of circumstances and uncertainties. United in a shared goal of preventing the spread of infection, the MGC and our licensees view this immediate mitigation measure as our social responsibility to prioritise the health and safety of one another above all else."
