tage to automatically monitor and regulate solder height in selective soldering. Until recently, there has not

been a way to measure the wave height in conventional wave sol- dering systems, without inter- rupting production and using external measuring instruments. Even then, the measurement is only a snapshot of the state of the machine and does not offer any information about necessary parameter modification or sup- port automated feedback control.

Automatic Wave Height Measurement

SEHO has developed an

automatic wave height measure- ment system, which is built into the soldering section of its MWS 2300. It is based on contact meas- urement, and designed to produce reliable results for both laminar and turbulent solder flow. A reference measurement is

performed to determine the ideal state of the solder wave height. The measure value, as well as the configured machine parame- ters are stored in the system. According to a customizable timetable, the system performs automatic measurements of wave height during production by lowering a bar with sensors to the surface of the wave. Then, based on the measurements and a mathematical model, the wave height is adjusted as needed to within configurable tolerances. If the necessary change is

outside the defined tolerances, the system calculates and pro- vides a recommendation. Then, the operator may decide whether or not the change should be made, or if the problem originates some- where else. All measurements are logged and all process changes are logged for complete traceabil- ity, providing proof of the quality of the finished product. The benefits of traceability

are clear. Deviations from the ideal process are spotted quickly and potential causes identified immediately.

Future-Proof Selective Soldering

Selective soldering is one of

the most forward-looking tech- nologies in electronics manufac- turing today. It is efficient with both energy and materials, deliv- ers reliable results, and depend- ing on the type of machine, can be used for many different applica- tions.

These unique features

lengthen the lifetime of the noz- zle over that of conventional technology by more than three times. This results in remark- able cost savings over time. Also, maintenance requirements are reduced considerably. The LongLife solder nozzle

does not need to be cleaned or reactivated at any time during an entire work shift. It also elim- inates the need for activation
