Xeros’ Bead-Cleaning Laundry System Scoops Two Major Awards
UK-based polymer bead-cleaning pioneer Xeros has won two prestigious awards on different sides of the Atlantic in a single evening.
Xeros, based in Rotherham’s Advanced Manufacturing Park, was named University Spin-Out of the Year in the New Energy & Cleantech Awards 2014, in London, which recognise companies that have played a pivotal role in the development of the green energy and cleantech industries. The company markets a virtually waterless commercial laundry system, utilising technology developed at the University of Leeds.
In addition, the company won Bronze in the Energy/Sustainability category for its virtually waterless commercial
laundry system, at the Edison Awards 2014 in San Francisco – one of the most prestigious accolades a company can receive in innovation and business.
Xeros’ patented polymer bead- cleaning system is currently being used in commercial washing machines, where it cuts water use by up to 80%, reduces energy usage by up to 50% and detergent use by up to half, compared to conventional solutions. The company has also developed a late-stage prototype for a domestic bead-cleaning washing machine, as well as developing bead-cleaning for leather processing and other applications.
The Xeros system includes a specially-designed washing
machine that uses polymer beads in place of large amounts of hot water to remove stains from fabrics. By combining the beads’ molecular structure with a small amount of a proprietary detergent solution, dirt from soiled items is attracted and absorbed by the beads, producing cleaner results. The reusable beads have a lifespan of hundreds of washes before being collected and recycled for reintroduction into the polymer supply chain.
The latest awards join a growing list of accolades that Xeros has received for developing its bead- cleaning technology, including a BusinessGreen Leaders Award, and a Northern Tech Award this year. In 2013, Xeros secured two prizes in the Rushlight Awards – the Sustainable Manufacturing & Services and the Environmental Management accolades.
Bill Westwater, CEO of Xeros, stated: “It is always special for the company to be recognised as a green game- changer with such prestigious awards. However, to win two awards, on the same night, in San Francisco and London, is certainly a first for Xeros. It’s a testament to the global relevance of Xeros bead cleaning and the fantastic efforts from our teams in both the US and the UK.”
