Inside Interclean

It’s always a concern in the time leading up to a big event that people will build it up so high that your expectations just cannot be met. “Are you excited for Interclean?”, “Are you all ready for Interclean yet?” and “What have you got planned for Interclean?” are a set of questions which were aimed at me constantly in the two months prior to the big opening day, and were sentences I found myself asking in interviews and directed at clients, simply because everyone else was.

It is difficult only having been in the industry a year to know what to expect of trade shows. Needless to say, I had appointments scheduled from dawn ‘til dusk, but could it really be as bad (or rather, good) as all that? Whenever I asked anyone what it was really like to go to the Amsterdam show, it was the size factor which seemed to be imposed on most people’s minds – all anyone

seemed to say was “you’ll never see a show as big as this one.”

It followed suit that my expectations contained three common themes: it would be big, it would be busy, and every other show I attended afterwards would seem like a disappointment. But did these ideas lend themselves to the truth? Well, if the fact that when we touched down in the airport I had to walk for about 20 minutes before I reached the exit, was anything to go by, they were right. However, despite the enormity of the site, I managed to get around every hall and get a sneak peak of everything on offer, and there are some real stand-out highlights below – the ones which aren’t top secret launches anyway!

Meet And Greet The first highlight for me was fulfilling something which I had been looking forward to the entire time I was planning appointments and who to visit – meeting the people I email

so regularly! The email-only culture which has developed since the ability to unlock global contacts really took off, is something which I think people see as a necessity rather than a desire. The cleaning industry, despite cleaning robots and automisation, is still very much a people-based industry, so it was a pleasure to finally have a coffee and discuss article ideas with people in the flesh.

But it wasn’t just email acquaintances I was able to see; one of the things that I think struck me most about Interclean, was its ability to connect so many with customers they would not normally meet. While globalisation may have had a slightly negative impact upon the personality within the industry, it certainly hasn’t had a negative impact upon business progression. As this is the go-to event for most companies in the world, it shouldn’t really be as astounding as it is to witness the variety on display.
