A View From Abroad: Changing Your Ways Is Not A Weakness

Too many times, I have seen owners want to maintain practices they have had for decades: “This is the way I have

always run my company, and there is no need to change!” Interestingly, many of the individuals who do not want to change have a hard time identifying the needs of today’s customers. “Today the customer wants more for less,” they say repeatedly. Today’s customer does want more, and it is vital that our operations are able to provide more by being ready to change to meet the needs of the customer.

Are you one of those owners? Here are some reasons to change:

1

It prevents the use of new technologies

Today in the cleaning industry, so many new technologies assist in improving productivity. If an owner is dependent on the technology of several years ago then it prevents the company from offering state-of-the- art industry cleaning programmes.

2

Employees become less productive

Working for an owner who doesn’t implement up-to-date cleaning methods or equipment, and who wants things done the same way that he/she has done them for years, doesn’t contribute to the motivation of the employee. It limits the creativity of the employee, and the results are less productivity.

3

There are no real growth opportunities

An employer who wants things done like they have always been done limits the growth opportunities for those employees who are creative and have the energy to improve their work. An employee will only bring you new ideas for so long, and then if they get no response, they will stop bringing you those creative ideas. Successful companies are those companies that encourage and reward employees for new ideas.

Leonard will headline the new ISSA Excellence Awards Luncheon at the close of Friday’s exhibit hours, where the 2014 ISSA Innovation Award winners and Best Customer Service Award winners will be revealed. ISSA members that have reached signifi cant member milestones also will be honoured during the complimentary luncheon, sponsored by the American Association of

Cleaning Equipment Manufacturers (AACEM). Friday’s attendees will also have a chance of winning a photo opportunity with Pitino, as well as one of multiple autographed boxing gloves from Leonard.

Following the ISSA Excellence Awards Luncheon, Friday attendees can take advantage of additional educational sessions on critical trends, leadership, and other hot industry topics – but that is not all! ISSA is sweetening the pot with discounted SeaWorld, Universal Studios, and Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park tickets, only available for Friday attendees.

many of those companies that are awarded the contract are using new technologies and new ideas, enhancing the creativity of their proposals in the preparation stages.

5

It limits the development of a strategic plan of growth

An owner who doesn’t want to stay the same usually has no plan for growth. When their management team proposes new ideas or new ways of doing things that will benefi t them in the long-term, they are shot down by the owner because they were not their own ideas or ways of doing things.

Change might be diffi cult, but it is imperative if you want to grow, develop employees and please the customer. Remember, it is not weak to change, but a sign of strength!
