Sample Preparation & Processing

Accelerating Development of Sustainable Textile Dyes

Rapid 2D barcode rack readers and automated tube picking equipment from Ziath are helping Colorifix to accelerate development of revolutionary biological dyes to help the textile industry dramatically reduce its environmental impact.

Colorifix is the first company to develop an entirely biological process to produce, deposit and fix pigments onto textiles. Carefully selecting microorganisms from a vast library of biological samples, Colorifix can produce colours as they are seen in nature, which are then grown in their laboratories and fermented at a larger scale. This fermentation broth is then used to dye fabrics the desired colour. The process uses no toxic chemicals, produces zero toxic waste, and drastically reduces use of electricity and water compared to traditional synthetic fabric dyeing.

Will Alexander, a Senior Lab Technician at Colorifix commented: “Our large library of bacterial strains and DNA samples is stored in 2D barcoded tube racks. Traditionally selection and management of these samples has been a time-consuming and error prone manual process monopolising the time of 3 staff members working together. The primary driving forces behind our investing in the Ziath Mirage 2D barcode readers and Mohawk automated tube picker was to increase throughput of the tube selection process, improve organisation and tracking of tubes as they were used, and to improve the efficiency of how we store 2D barcoded tube in racks. Additionally, our libraries of biological samples are rapidly expanding at an exponential rate. Therefore, it was crucial for us to implement a precise, reliable, and fast sample management system in advance of our reference collection becoming much larger.”

He added: “Using the Mohawk/Mirage combination we have been able to speed up our tube selection process, keep much better track of sample inventory and manage the tubes as we use them. The ease-of-use and wide compatibility with our existing inventory has given us confidence that as our libraries continue to expand, the Ziath devices will continue to do much of the legwork in managing the inventories and ensuring that everything remains organised. Users have particularly appreciated the speed at which the Mirage can scan barcodes and immediately export this data in file formats that work with our existing IT infrastructure and the ease-of-use of both the Mirage and Mohawk once fully set-up. The support provided by Ziath has been second to none from initial demonstration, help with smoothly integrating the devices into our workflow and promptly answering any questions we have had.”

Low Temperature Flow Chemistry Made Easy

Used in conjunction with an external thermoregulation circulator, the Cold Coil II™ flow reactor module from Uniqsis can maintain stable temperatures between -78°C and +150°C for extended periods of time.

Proven to provide a flexible, entry-level solution for low temperature flow chemistry applications the Cold Coil II™ includes a glass cover to eliminate convective effects within fume cupboards. For routine operation at very low temperatures an optional vacuum jacketed glass cover is also available.

The Cold Coil II™ is compatible with all Uniqsis coil reactors, from 2.0ml up to 60 ml capacity. A proprietary clamping mechanism holds the coil reactor firmly in place and ensures optimal thermal contact whilst allowing coil reactors to be easily interchanged.

The Cold Coil II can be simply converted into a photoreactor by coupling with a Uniqsis PhotoSyn high power LED light unit. An optional Glass Static Mixer chip module allows the Cold Coil II to be used as a rapid mixing device before flowing directly into a coil reactor as an incubator module.

The Cold Coil II is also compatible with the Uniqsis HotColumn multiple column reactor adaptor for packed bed applications. To ensure accurate remote measurement of the Cold Coil II reactor temperature an optional internal temperature probe can be connected directly via RS232C. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/a1DW

Cell Imager with Automated Evidence of Clonality at Day 0

Advanced Instruments is proud to announce the launch of Cell Metric X, a revolutionary new image-based system for high-throughput cell line development. Combining the same high-contrast, high-resolution imaging as its predecessor with the added advantage of automated evidence of clonality (AEC), Cell Metric X enables scientists to quickly identify clonally derived cells at day 0. This reduces the time and effort spent on image analysis needed to confirm successful seeding, and in turn, delivers rapid assurance of clonality with image-based evidence required for FDA IND submission delivered weeks earlier.

Cell Metric X retains many core features, including high quality, high contrast, brightfield imaging; high-throughput 10-position plate stacker; robotic access via flexible API and barcode reader; edge-of-well imaging for optimal single-cell detection, and compatibility with the VIPS® PRO for double lock of monoclonality assurance.

New features include automated Evidence of Clonality, which saves the user time by pre-identifying cell locations, and STUDIUS™ integration for streamlined workflow and quality data management across the Solentim Ecosystem. Additionally, the system offers walk-away automation for reduced hands-on time for high-throughput use, easy integration with third-party robotics, an automatic clonality report for confident submissions, Confluence Precision Scan accuracy within 5%, and automated setup for ease-of-use and reduced learning curve.

Cell Metric X is available either as a single plate system or with an automated, temperature-controlled 10-plate stacker. It’s also fully compatible with third-party robotic integration and is part of the Solentim Ecosystem for cell line development, which includes VIPS® PRO, ICON™, and STUDIUS™. Seamless integration between all products allows for instant triaging of clones without spreadsheet comparison, as well as secure clone tracking and automatically created clonality reports for regulatory submission.
