Laboratory Products 41 New Software Empowers Scientists in Life Science Laboratories
TotalLab, a global leader in image analysis software for life science, has advanced its 1D gel electrophoresis and blot image analysis software offering with the launch of Phoretix 1D.
Building on TotalLab’s decades of experience responding to the needs of customers, Phoretix 1D has been designed from the ground up to be quick to learn with an easy-to-navigate workfl ow. It benefi ts from user-customisable automation which enables fast, accurate and reproducible results when analysing 1D gels and blots.
Built using completely redesigned code, the software’s intuitive algorithms enable greater standardisation in established workfl ows and gives users full control over their desired level of automation.
Phoretix 1D’s industry-leading background removal algorithms automatically remove background ‘noise’ to ensure more accurate band intensity measurements. This increased accuracy feeds through into improved molecular weight calculation, quantity calibration and normalisation.
Alongside these algorithms, its user-defi ned protocols enable complete one-click analysis of images. This feature alone completely removes the risk of inter-operator error whilst simultaneously increasing productivity and confi dence in your analysis. It’s also possible to share user-defi ned protocols between different users and facilities thus standardising lab workfl ows around the world.
Dr Steven Dodd, Head of Sales and Business Development commented: “We have been listening to the evolving needs of the market and are delighted to release our streamlined software for the comprehensive analysis of 1D gels and blots. We’ve also identifi ed the growing number of Mac users in the life sciences and made this 1D software compatible with the latest M1 Macs.
“Using the latest advances in technology, our product developments will support our customers to optimise workfl ows and improve the reproducibility and reliability of their results, whilst adhering to 21 CFR Part 11 regulations where necessary.”
TotalLab’s expanding portfolio includes 1D gel and blot software Phoretix 1D, image matching software CLIQS 1D Pro, as well as 2D image statistics software SameSpots and 2D-PAGE HCP coverage software SpotMap.

Acquisition Expands Water Microbiology Testing Capabilities
IDEXX, the global leader in rapid microbiology testing for water, has acquired Tecta-PDS, an innovative Canadian company that has introduced automation to water microbiology testing for parameters including E. coli and total coliforms. The acquisition allows IDEXX to expand its range of water microbiology testing options for both laboratory-based and in-fi eld testing.
Founded in 2003, Tecta-PDS has developed an effective and reliable automated water testing solution and has grown to expand its customer base in more than 50 countries. The Tecta B16 and B4 instruments automate important steps in water microbiology testing, allowing results to be delivered to laboratories in real-time. Full automation of incubation and test interpretation eliminates the need for a visual read of the test. Results are sent anytime, anywhere by email with positive results available within hours. The Tecta method is US EPA approved for detecting total coliforms and E. coli in drinking water.
“Tecta-PDS offers an innovative automated microbiology testing platform that advances the provision of safe and clean water worldwide,” said Chun-Ming Chen, Vice President and General Manager of IDEXX Water and OPTI Medical Systems. “We admire the ingenuity and customer satisfaction track record that Tecta-PDS has cultivated over the course of nearly twenty years. We look forward to introducing this platform to water testing laboratories globally and welcoming Tecta-PDS to IDEXX.”
IDEXX water testing solutions are approved or accepted by regulatory agencies in over 40 countries, protecting billions of people daily, delivering easy, rapid, accurate and cost-effective information on water quality to laboratories, public utilities, and facility managers. In addition to Tecta, IDEXX products include Colilert®

Benchtop Blast Freezers Simplify R&D of Temperature Sensitive Materials
R&D facilities typically lack the resources to purchase production-level blast freezers, which are often too costly and large for the needs of a lab. Instead, researchers need cost-effective, high-performance benchtop units for quick experimentation in space-constrained areas.
Fortunately, industry innovators have developed mini blast freezers that can lower the temperature far below conventional levels in minutes as well as promptly thaw as needed while accommodating packaging sizes from 2 mL - 6 L or more. The compact liquid nitrogen (LN2
) freezers also facilitate experimentation with adjustable temperature profi le recipes that help to automate the process. The benchtop units are designed for lab R&D, utilising liquid nitrogen from small, portable dewar tanks, making larger bulk tanks unnecessary.
For example, the benchtop Cryometrix blast freezer from Refl ect Scientifi c utilises safely contained liquid nitrogen at -196°C to freeze products with cooled air. The system is designed so there is no contact between the LN2 Using only a small amount of LN2
adjustable from +40°C to -90°C, with temperature uniformity of ± 3°C throughout. A unique aspect of the benchtop LN2
blast freezer is the option to add a rapid thawing capability up to 40°C in the same machine, which can
streamline R&D and production while conserving space. With this option, the end user does not need two separate machines. Programmable thermal recipes enable simple automated control of how quickly the unit transitions from freeze to thaw or thaw to freeze cycles. More information online:
