Laboratory Products 43 World’s First Printer for Soft, Stretchable Electronics

Voltera, a leader and manufacturer of additive and printed electronics technology, has announced the launch of NOVA, a groundbreaking platform for printing fl exible hybrid electronics. NOVA uses direct-ink write technology to print circuits on soft, stretchable, and conformable surfaces.

“This fi rst-of-its-kind benchtop machine unlocks rapid fl exible hybrid electronics prototyping and the ability to experiment with custom inks and substrates,” said Alroy Almeida, CEO and co-founder of Voltera. “NOVA is already being used to innovate how humankind explores deep space; to develop printed, on- skin sensors for medical imaging; and to prototype clothing that can measure your heart rate yet can go through the gentle cycle in your washing machine.”

NOVA’s precision extrusion technology makes it easier and faster to conduct research by enabling rapid benchtop iteration, leading to more reliable results and lower costs.

“With NOVA, we can make devices and align them to sub 10-micron precision, which is essential to everything that we do,” said Alex Kashkin, Graduate Researcher, Velasquez Group at MIT, who is using NOVA to develop printed electron sources for neutralising ionic thruster plumes in low-earth orbit. “If we have a 20-micron deviation, our devices explode. We need a lot of precision, we need to have tuned materials, and NOVA enables both.”

NOVA features: Semi-automated calibration - New material calibration can happen anywhere between a few minutes to a few hours. It no longer takes months to dial-in print settings. NOVA creates high-resolution prints using any screen printable material; Vacuum Table and custom fi xturing - Print directly onto soft, fl exible, 3D printed, and unevenly shaped materials. Made from porous titanium, the Vacuum Table applies uniform airfl ow to substrates. It is easily removed to expose custom fi xturing elements for securing rigid substrates like glass or traditional FR4 boards; Smart Dispenser - NOVA senses the pressure, temperature, and viscosity of any ink or screen-printable material. It is so precise, you can print anything on everything; Integrated vision system - Align and inspect prints quickly using an onboard camera with an AR print overlay.

Highly Characterised, High Purity Exosome Standards

Flu Tests Detect New Virus Variants

The fl u season has begun and different virus variants are also circulating in Germany. With the fl u tests from biotechnology company R-Biopharm, patients quickly have certainty: Its RIDA®

GENE Flu assays also reliably detect

the two novel variants. The company made the announcement with regard to infl uenza A H1N1pdm09, which is circulating primarily in the United Kingdom, and the H3N2 subtype, which was rampant in Denmark in the spring and is currently dominating infl uenza activity in Germany.

Life science specialists, AMSBIO, offer an extensive range of highly characterised, high purity exosomes for use as control standards in applications including marker assessment, immunocapture performance evaluation, exosome quantifi cation, OMICS analysis, fl ow cytometry and electron microscopy.

Exosomes or extracellular vesicles (EV) are small endosome derived lipid nanoparticles (50-300nm in diameter), actively secreted by exocytosis in most living cells. Exosomes have been shown to have pleiotropic physiological and pathological functions and play signifi cant roles in diverse conditions such as cancer, infectious and neurodegenerative diseases.

Benefi ting from an exceptionally large cell bank built up over several decades, AMSBIO is in a unique position to offer researchers an unmatched range of exosomes from a wide variety of biological sources, including cell culture supernatant, human plasma, serum, and urine. All exosomes supplied by AMSBIO are supplied lyophilised meaning they are easy to ship, store for up to 36 months (+4° to 8°C) and reconstitute.

Smaller diameter exosomes are supplied highly purifi ed using a combination of tangential fl ow fi ltration (TFF) and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Exosomes larger than 150 nm diameter are purifi ed using tangential fl ow fi ltration (TFF). All AMSBIO isolated exosome standards are then quantifi ed and validated for overall protein content, size distribution, concentration, and specifi c marker expression by Nanoparticles Tracking Analysis. This unique combination of high purity and comprehensive marker characterisation delivers exceptionally reliable research results. To track the distribution and movement of specifi c exosome standards, AMSBIO also offers fl uorescent labelling.

“Mutations in the target gene (MP gene) can affect the diagnostic performance of infl uenza screening assays, producing false-negative test results,” explained Dr Andreas Simons, Head of Product Management at R-Biopharm. “Alignments of the detection systems we used with the described sequences of the two novel virus variants showed no mismatches. Their reliable detection is not affected by the described mutations.”

This means laboratories can continue to reliably confi rm or rule out infl uenza infections using R-Biopharm’s RIDA®
