Combination GPC/SEC Detector Delivers Outstanding Macromolecular Characterisation
Testa Analytical has developed a new Multiple Angle Light Scattering/Differential Refractive Index (MALS/DRI) combination detector package for more demanding Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC/SEC) applications.
Delivering absolute molecular weight data from small to large molecules, MALS has established itself as a tried and trusted GPC/ SEC detection technique for polymer, protein, and polysaccharide applications.
However, the most accurate and sensitive results can be only achieved by pairing MALS with a DRI detector, designed to deliver concentration information detected at the very same wavelength.
The new COMBO-TWO MALS/DRI detector package from Testa Analytical brings together a perfectly matched combination of a high performance 7-angle MALS and an ultra- stable DRI detector - both designed to optimally operate using an integral 640nm light source. Fully compatible with all commercial GPC/SEC systems, the unique COMBO-TWO offers the lowest possible delay volume between the MALS and DRI detectors enabling exceptional results to be routinely obtained. Operating from room temperature up to 80°C, with high thermal stability, COMBO-TWO is simple to use - just inject your sample into the low-volume fl ow cell to obtain highly accurate and reliable MALS and DRI data.

Using a Specialist Detector for Nitrosamine Analysis in Pharmaceutical Drugs Over the past few years, the news has
seen many high-profi le recalls of various pharmaceutical drugs that have been found to contain nitrosamines. Nitrosamines are carcinogenic compounds, so they must be monitored to ensure unsafe levels are not found in consumer products. Governments worldwide are now requiring reporting on Nitrosamine Levels, with manufacturers often fi nding the analysis anything but simple, with common issues including achieving the required detection limits and false positives.
The Ellutia 800 Series TEA is the ideal detector for nitrosamine analysis thanks to its selectivity and sensitivity for Nitroso compounds. The TEA is a chemiluminescence detector that can be interfaced with a GC, HPLC, or total nitrosamine analysis system. The TEA uses a pyrolyser in GC operation to cleave the NO group from compounds as they elute from the GC column. This NO group is then reacted with ozone which produces a photon of light which is detected.
The 800 Series TEA can be interfaced with a chemical stripping system for testing pharmaceutical drugs, allowing for rapid testing of ATNC (Apparent Total N-nitrosamine content). This uses a chemical reaction to remove the NO group rather than a pyrolyser. This technique quickly gives an accurate result for the total nitrosamine content of a sample showing both volatile and non-volatile components in a single result.
Any positive sample can be further analysed by an 800 Series TEA interfaced to a GC where volatile nitrosamines such as NDMA (N-Nitrosodimethylamine) can be separated and quantifi ed.

New Application-Specifi c LC System
Thermo Fisher Scientifi c, has launched a new application-specifi c liquid chromatography (LC) system for biopharmaceutical laboratories to precisely generate high-purity products or for the isolation of contaminants.
The new Vanquish Analytical Purifi cation LC system combines the separation power of analytical LC with precise fractionation to generate high-purity products or for the isolation of contaminants. Moreover, with the introduction of the new integrated Vanquish Fraction Collector, a wide application range is covered, giving all users precision in purifi cation across their whole analytical workfl ow.
Biopharma laboratories can now accurately fractionate with high recovery and low carry-over, with additional automation features that will allow researchers to focus on success in their process results instead of handling the tool. “We have two Vanquish Fraction Collectors and are running them 24/7 right now. No matter the fraction size, it is fractionated and afterwards reanalysed. The team is thrilled, and these fraction collectors are running robustly with no errors,” said Dr Alexander Schwenger, Senior Manager Analytical Development for CureVac AG, Germany.
“Biopharmaceutical laboratories working at the forefront of new drug development require detailed characterisation of impurities. The superior user experience and separation performance of our award-winning Vanquish LC product line, with the addition of the new Vanquish Fraction Collector, enable researchers to isolate and purify compounds right after their analytical separation,” said Kent Davidson, Vice President and General Manager, High Performance Chromatography Solutions, Thermo Fisher Scientifi c. “With our broad range of high-quality chromatographic consumables, our customers can be confi dent that sample integrity will be preserved throughout their analytical workfl ow. Our products can dramatically accelerate the science to get new life- saving drugs to the patient.”

ANP or Aqueous Normal Phase uses the silica hydride particle with a small aqueous component in the mobile phase to retain polar compounds. Visit
cogent-hplc.com for more details. Unlike HILIC, the main retention mechanism does not include partitioning and it will equilibrate very fast between gradients.
