Biomolecular Interactions Instrumentation Additions ForteBio®

, Inc announced the launch of its Octet RED96 System, as well as its new Dip and Read Protein L Biosensor for use on the company’s Octet platform. The product

introductions further widen the scope and utility of the company’s flagship instrumentation system, which provides real-time, label-free analysis of biomolecular interactions, with unprecedented ease of use and cost-efficiency. The Octet RED96 system can rapidly measure protein and other biomolecule concentrations, as well as determine kinetics, affinity and specificity of protein-protein and protein-small molecule interactions. It extends the capabilities of the company’s premier Octet RED platform by featuring biosensor re-racking, which enables more efficient workflow, reduced amounts of capture molecule use and lower assay-running costs.

ForteBio’s new Dip and Read Protein L biosensor enables rapid and direct quantification of a broad set of kappa light chain containing immunoglobulins, including Fab fragments and single-chain variable fragments otherwise known as ScFv. ForteBio’s Octet platform is based on the company’s proprietary BioLayer Interferometry (BLI) technology, which uses optical biosensors to measure multiple interactions in parallel, without the use of detection agents. The Octet platform consists of 8- and 16-channel instruments that accommodate 96- and 384-well assay formats. All Octet biosensors are designed to simplify kinetic characterisation and quantitation by eliminating throughput and time-to-result limitations of traditional SPR-based assays and ELISA. The Octet biosensors are disposable, configured in a standard microplate format and are coated with a proprietary biocompatible matrix that is uniform, non-denaturing and has minimal non-specific binding.

Recombinant Human Albumin for Use in Unique Sealant Technology Novozymes Biopharma is pleased to announce that its recombinant human albumin, albucult®

, is being used by Neomend in its ProGEL®

PLATINUM surgical sealant.

This product will be commercially available in Europe beginning in the second quarter of 2011. Neomend is an innovator in sealant and adhesion prevention products for the surgical marketplace. The company utilises albucult as a key component in ProGEL PLATINUM, the only sealant of its kind developed to treat pleural air leaks following lung resection surgery. Neomend’s ProGEL is a hydrogel polymer consisting of Novozymes’ albucult and a cross-linking component of polyethylene glycol (PEG). When they are combined, a rapid cross-linking reaction creates a hydrogel matrix that results in the formation of a strong, adherent and flexible seal. The technology, which has received a European CE Mark, enables surgeons to more effectively treat lung air leaks during surgery and has already been used in more than 8,000 procedures in the US since April of last year.

David Renzi, Neomend’s President and CEO, commented: “Novozymes’ extensive experience in manufacturing, regulatory and global supply, combined with its commitment to innovation, makes the company the ideal partner for Neomend to work with on its unique sealant technology. We will launch ProGEL PLATINUM in Europe in the second quarter of this year, while also continuing the development of this platform technology into other clinical areas such as spine, general surgery and gynecology.”

“Novozymes is delighted that Neomend has selected albucult for use in its unique sealant technology”, said Dermot Pearson, Marketing Director, Novozymes Biopharma. “The partnership demonstrates Novozymes’ commitment to providing quality materials for use in the healthcare, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and allows the company to position itself as a reliable partner in the wound sealant and medical device markets.” The use of albucult in ProGEL PLATINUM and other medical devices confers a range of unique advantages not possible with animal-derived ingredients such as sustainability of supply, GMP compliance and improved biocompatibility. Albucult also delivers unprecedented performance and quality benefits to medical applications including sealants, device coating and cell therapy applications while ensuring batch-to-batch consistency, which can significantly reduce lot testing burdens for customers.

The G185 Incubator – A Japanese Case story

Portable Incubator for Safe Transport of Living Cells

K-SYSTEMS G95 portable incubator protects gametes and other living cells from temperature, gas fluctuations, and harsh light conditions during transport.

The well-designed unit has a built-in battery, which enables the G95 to maintain a correct and stable temperature level up to 4 hours. The incubator can be connected to a cigarette lighter socket in a vehicle for longer transport. The temperature range can be set from ambient to 49.9°C.

The chamber of the portable incubator can be purged with the desired gas mixture and is easily disconnected from the quick-snap valve located at the back of the G95.

The G95 portable incubator is ideal for field work or for transporting living cells between satellite labs. Culture dishes and/or test tubes are placed and tighten into interchangeable warming blocks for safe transport.

With several hundreds installations into IVF Laboratories worldwide, K-SYSTEMS G185 Bench top incubator is an ideal device for your laboratory. Sixteen units have been supplied for the Asada Ladies Clinic, Nagoya Aichi in Japan. The clinic initially started with four units and used them for almost a year. After a conclusive published comparison between the G185 and conventional incubators, they opted to equip their new modern facility with twelve more units. “The K-SYSTEMS G185’s advantages are that in culture rooms with limited space, it is smaller than existing models, and cleaning and management are much simpler as it operates without humidification. We also think that it could possibly lead to complete individualisation of embryo culture. In frozen-thawed transfer cycles the Day 3 good embryo rate was significantly higher with the G185”. (Abstract of a published paper in 2010 by Noritaka Fukanaga – Comparison of Embryo Development between a New Concept Incubator and the Current Model.)

The G185 Incubator is composed of 10 individual culture chambers each can accommodate up to 4 dishes. When placing cells in an individual chamber, the G185 has a fast recovery to homeostatic conditions due to fast returns of

temperature, CO2 and O2 levels. Furthermore, the unit is equipped with an integrated VOC and HEPA filter, ensuring a grade A air quality. The G185 is cost effective in daily use due

to a very low gas consumption using 1 l/h of CO2 and 12 l/h of N2. The unit accepts 100% CO2 and 100% N2. Its built-in gas mixer allows a working range of 2-10% of CO2 and 2-20% of O2. The G185 has as a standard Windows®

based data logging system with internal and external alarms. Circle no. 177 Circle no. 179 ELEGANT SPACE SAVING DESIGN K-SYSTEMS® - Kivex Biotec Ltd I Tel.: +45 4599 5600 I info@K-SYSTEMS.dk I www.K-SYSTEMS.dk INCUBATOR TECHNOLOGY? READY FOR ADVANCED
