Spotlight Cooling & Freezing Super-Efficient Convenient Colour-Coded Cell Freezing

Now that the compelling advantages of BioCision’s CoolCell are widely known, vibrant orange and green versions join the original purple CoolCell to provide useful colour coding. Instantly identify different cell types or different researchers’ samples in a shared freezer, or simply choose your favourite colour! In addition to saving time, cutting hazardous waste and delivering higher reproducibility compared with alcohol-based cell freezing methods, CoolCell pays for itself in less than three months. CoolCell features a solid thermal core for consistent, controlled –1ºC/minute cell freezing in a –80ºC freezer, without any alcohol. Requiring less than 5 minutes between freezing cycles and no maintenance, CoolCell provides truly user-friendly and environmentally conscious cell freezing.

Michelle Nemits, BioCision VP, Sales and Business Development, commented: “Such has been the success of CoolCell that laboratory freezers often contain many units, so we have launched two new colours to help users identify their frozen cell samples more quickly. CoolCell offers many advantages compared with alcohol-filled containers, which require continuous maintenance and are less reproducible than our innovative controlled freezing technology. Setting a new standard of excellence in cryopreservation, CoolCell is inexpensive and even pays for itself very quickly by using a novel alloy core instead of hazardous solvents.” Eliminating the use of hazardous solvents, such as isopropanol, is a major benefit of CoolCell, helping labs reduce hazardous waste as well as avoiding cost for replacement. Importantly, the elimination of alcohol also means the elimination of variability in freezing runs. CoolCell delivers high reproducibility, consistent cooling of –1ºC/minute and identical freezing profiles each time. The result is superior cell viability and function and more reliable cell assays for scientific, clinical and diagnostic procedures. Ideal for cell lines, stem cells, PBMC, any primary cell and yeast, CoolCell holds 12 screw cap 2ml cryotubes for convenient multiple batch freezing in a –80ºC freezer. No pre- cooling is necessary; CoolCell can be placed in the freezer at any angle and freezer heating is only one-third that caused by an alcohol-filled container avoiding thawing of neighbouring sample boxes. Samples are ready for archive storage within three hours, while rapid recycling between freezes saves valuable time. The unbreakable, insulated design of the CoolCell ensures easy portability of frozen cells – without ‘frosty’ fingers – and the lid opens easily even when frozen.

Versatile Chilled Reactor for Sub-Zero Flow Chemistry

Automated and Efficient Handling of Frozen Samples

Greiner Bio-One GmbH introduced the novel Datamatrix Cryo Rack. Up to 48 Cryo.s freezing vials can be scanned simultaneously in this rack, thus enabling automated and efficient sample handling.

Cryo.s freezing tubes feature an identification number encrypted in a Datamatrix code. Each frozen sample is thus given a unique, machine- readable identity that is linked to sample-related information in a database. This plays a key role in a laboratory’s day-to-day work, as it enables samples to be identified accurately even after a number of years. The Datamatrix code is written into the plastic base of the vials using a laser. The design of the Datamatrix Cryo Rack allows simultaneous scanning of up to 48 tubes via openings in the base using a flat bed scanner. Thus data on the origin, type and age of samples can be saved and processed automatically. The codes enable durable and reliable sample labelling, as they are resistant to mechanical stresses, low storage temperatures and most solvents. An automatic error- correction algorithm, which even makes partly damaged codes readable again, provides extra data reliability. The new Datamatrix Cryo Rack for Cryo.s freezing vials completes the cryogenics product portfolio of Greiner Bio-One GmbH.

German Language Freeze-Drying Webinar Programme

SP Scientific announced a new programme of free German language webinars devoted to a range of important freeze-drying topics.

FlowSyn ‘Cold’ from Uniqsis is a stand-alone reactor module which, when coupled with the FlowSyn integrated continuous flow reactor and a recirculating chiller/heater, allows reactions to be performed at precisely controlled temperatures between –70°C and +150°C. Flow chemistry is an ideal tool for performing fast exothermic chemistries such as metallations. The high surface area/volume ratio of the coil tubing reactors allows heat generated by an exothermic chemical reaction to be rapidly dissipated. However, active cooling may be needed as metallations are typically performed at very low temperature (often –78°C in batch) with slow addition of the organometallic base, in order to control the exothermic nature of these reactions. Using FlowSyn Cold, such batch reactions can be run at higher, more convenient temperatures with similar or improved reaction outcomes, due to the improved control of mixing and temperature. Not only is the reaction time speeded up but less cooling power is required.

FlowSyn Cold works with the standard FlowSyn coil reactors from 2ml to 40ml volume, allowing for seamless scale-up. An integrated purging inlet allows connection of a nitrogen line to prevent condensation and ice formation, so that reactions with PFA or PTFE reactors are clearly visible.

For temperature-controlled mixing the system can be further enhanced by pairing with the mixer block, which is mounted on the cold coil reactor and therefore also temperature- controlled. The FlowSyn in-built interface can be used to communicate with an external recirculating chiller such as the Huber Tango®

, Unistat® or Petite Fleur® . A temperature probe

located inside the FlowSyn Cold module ensures that accurate and uniform temperatures are maintained over the course of the reaction. Compatibility with FlowSyn Multi-X allows multiple reactions at varying temperatures to be performed automatically, and with a heating recirculator and suitable thermal fluid, FlowSyn Cold can be heated to 150°C.
