18 Breaking the Mould


Battling yeast and mould contamination in foodstuffs requires specialist culture media and Lab M has added Dichloran 18% Glycerol Agar (DG18 Agar) ISO to the armoury. Designed specifically to enhance the growth of viable osmophilic yeasts and xerophilic moulds from low water activity environments, this complete formulation requires no additional supplementation, minimising media preparation time and reducing procurement needs and costs. DG18 complies both with current ISO requirements and methods set out in the Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM), supporting testing laboratories in achieving their quality standards.


Complementing DG18 is Lab M’s Dichloran Rose Bengal Chloramphenicol Agar (ISO), which is designed for the enumeration of viable yeasts and moulds in products with a higher water activity - above 0.95. It too is quick and easy to make up, requiring no additional supplementation. Prepared according to ISO 21527-1:2008 it complies with BAM, as well as American Public Health Association (APHA), methods.

Circle no. 57 Laser Diffraction Method Development Guidance


Recently published and now available for download on the Malvern Instruments website, ‘Method development for laser diffraction particle size analysis’ by diffraction specialist Dr Anne Virden provides practical guidance on developing robust analytical methods. Her article describes the process with reference to ISO13320 (2009), the international standard for laser diffraction particle size analysis, and other guidance documents.


Successful method development depends on rigorous and systematic examination of all the factors known to influence results, including sampling, dispersion/sample prep and measurement conditions. ‘Method development for laser diffraction particle size analysis’ considers each of these issues in turn, helping answer questions such as: whether to measure wet or dry; what dispersant to use; are the dispersion conditions breaking the particles of interest; and how to check the developed method is a good one. Over the last decade Malvern and others have made considerable progress in the area of method development. The latest version of ISO13320 reflects this and includes a substantial amount of advice. At Malvern a major focus is to grow and disseminate the information available, through education and software, such that laser diffraction can be used successfully for an ever-increasing variety of applications.

Molecular Biologists Targeted with Launch of Linear Shaking Baths


Grant Instruments is targeting molecular biologists with the launch of its precision engineered GLS Aqua Plus series linear shaking water baths. The GLS Aqua Plus series includes a choice of two models (12 and 18 litre) and features a robust patented high quality magnetically coupled shaking mechanism that provides maximum reliability, consistency and quiet operation. The stylish new baths include a drain tap to allow easy tank emptying, two programmable temperature and shaking presets for rapid selection of commonly used set points, a countdown timer with audible buzzer, and non-drip polycarbonate lids. The see-through gabled polycarbonate lid not only improves performance of the baths but limits evaporation, reduces contamination and conserves energy.


The new models boast precision temperature control throughout the operating range of ambient +5°C to 99°C with ±0.1°C stability and uniformity. A wide range of accessories is also available for the GLS Aqua Plus range - including flask and test tube trays, test tube and microtube racks - to provide exactly the right solution for your application.


The GLS Aqua Plus series linear shaking baths have been designed for molecular biology applications such as hybridisation, producing bacterial culture media and for solubility studies. Like all Grant products, the new water baths are built to last and are manufactured using only the highest quality materials and come with a 3-year warranty as standard.

Incubators give Maximum Security with Minimum Gas Usage


The IVS-9000GC & IVS-9160GC triple gas incubators from IKS have been praised by IVF users not only for their performance but also for their very low CO2 and N2 consumption. Many IVF laboratories have moved to lowered oxygen environments to improve embryo viability, and low gas usage not only offers substantial financial savings – thousands of euros a year in some cases - but also reduces the risk of running out of gas when the laboratory is unmanned.


Because of the novel design of these incubators, the minimum quantity of nitrogen – less than 10 litres - is required to restore the internal environment when the door


is opened. CO2 usage is minimised as well. Recovery to a stable condition takes less than five minutes, reducing the impact on sensitive samples.


The IVS-9000GC has a capacity of 33 litres, divided by six internal doors, and the IVS-9160GC a capacity of 173 litres, with eight internal doors. The stainless steel internal chamber has rounded corners for easy cleaning, and all internal components are autoclavable. A high efficiency HEPA filter keeps the interior free of dust and other particles. Both
