32 A Speedometer for Surfactants
Whether pumping, stirring or flooding: oil-water interfaces are always in motion. Just knowing the equilibrium value of the interfacial tension is no longer sufficient. The drop volume technique of the DVT50 from Krüss records the interfacial tension under dynamic conditions – in an interface age range from fractions of a second up to several minutes.
Thanks to its wide measuring range from 100 mN/m down to 0.1 mN/m and the possibility of thermostatting the liquid phases the instrument is suitable for a wide range of applications. Very simple handling during filling and cleaning as well as software control with programmed measuring sequences ensure a smooth measurement procedure with a high sample throughput.
Examples of applications include: emulsification in pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industries; tertiary crude oil recovery; solvent-free degreasing; and cleaning processes.

Vacuum Pump for Hazardous Gases and Contamination-Free Analytics
Vacuubrand offers especially tested leak tight diaphragm vacuum pumps for applications in which hazardous (toxic) gases are to be transferred or that require contamination free transfer of gases at defined purity stages. This includes transfer of particularly harmful or highly valuable gases, or process gases used for analytics of single gas components.
Particular leak tightness means specified and tested leakage rate. Vacuubrand’s new chemistry diaphragm pump MD 4CRL NT is not only featuring an especially low leakage rate which is 100% tested at every single pump, but has also been designed for use with corrosive gases. All media- contacted parts are made of fluorinated polymer materials and highly corrosion resistant stainless steel components (e.g. V4A). High pumping speed rates (3.4 m3/h at atmospheric pressure) over the full range down to close to the ultimate vacuum of 1.5 mbar suits the needs of many vacuum applications and processes.
Furthermore the patented drive system assures extremely silent and low-vibration operation. All VACUUBRAND chemistry diaphragm pumps feature the well proven PTFE sandwich-diaphragms as well as the stability-core design of the media contacted cylinder head part and diaphragm clamping disc resulting in high chemical resistance and outstanding diaphragm lifetime with low maintenance requirements.
Each and every MD 4CRL NT is leak tested (leakage rate specification limit 1 x 10-3 mbar l/s) to provide reliable leak tightness, even in long-term operation. It is usable for many applications in transferring highly valuable, corrosive, or even toxic gases, and is also usable as sample gas pump.

The popular Boxer brand of autoclaves returns to the market through the UK’s specialists laboratory equipment supplies company Lab3 Ltd. In just twelve months Lab3 has re-engineered this established brand, keeping many of the salient features that set it apart from others.
In the latter half of March 2011 Lab3 roll out the first in a new range of freestanding autoclaves that will include Eco models designed to reduce electricity and water usage and a Traditional range where the emphasis is faster cycle time. Both ranges are covered by a superb three-year warranty. Paul Bell, Business Development Manager at Lab3, explained: “I believe there is a need for a robust and easy to use autoclave for the professional laboratory and this range is the start of meeting that requirement.”

Having recently moved to new premises within the grounds of an English Stately home, GR Scientific have now placed a corporate video on their website which illustrates the progress that the company has made and also describes the three main titration products which they manufacture. The Aquamax KF Coulometric, Aquamax KF Volumetric and Aquamax TAN.
On each of the individual titrator product pages there is an “operational overview” video which shows how to assemble and get started using these titrators.
International Sales Manager, Karl Robertson, stated: “It is our intention to produce a series of these videos over the coming months to assist our distributors and also our end users. As well as being featured on our website they will be available to visitors at all of our international exhibition booths such as ArabLab, PittCon, etc.”

Retsch’s new cyclone mill TWISTER is specially designed for the processing of foods and feeds for subsequent NIR analysis. The optimised form of rotor and grinding chamber generates an air jet that carries the ground sample through the integrated cyclone into the sample bottle. The air jet prevents the material from heating up, thus preserving the moisture content. The provided sieves guarantee an optimum particle size distribution so that it is not necessary to recalibrate the NIR spectrometer. The rotor speed can be adjusted in three steps allowing for perfect adaptation to the sample requirements. Cleaning the mill is quick and easy as the air jet affects a complete discharge of the material from the grinding chamber.
This new cyclone mill in proven Retsch quality optimises the reproducible sample preparation to NIR analysis thus allowing for meaningful and reliable analysis results. Advantages include: ideal for grinding feeds, grains, forage and similar products; three controlled speeds; including rotor, grinding ring and sieve sections (1mm and 2mm); cyclone separator with 250ml collecting bottle for quick extraction of sample; no cross contamination thanks to easy cleaning; convenient operating panel; and professional industrial design with long lifetime.
