On March 8th, the entire school celebrated International Women’s Day. Throughout Primary, the girls looked at well-known female leaders and explorers. They wrote poems, watched videos and created booklets about their favourite female role models. In Secondary, students considered how they would “Choose to Challenge” and forge a more gender equal world
Alumna Rachel Biggs ‘85, presented virtually to IB1 Biology students, sharing her current work as a Research Specialist at BIOS and her education and career path with the students.
the English Department ran an Extreme Reading Photo Competition and the entries were fantastic! In Secondary, 1st Place went to Tessa Kearns ‘26, 2nd Place to Iroha Miyaguchi ‘27 and 3rd Place to Isabella Goodall ‘27. In Primary, Ellis Champion won 1st place with Grace Caplice in 2nd and Emmy Franklin in 3rd.
Twelve Secondary students took part in the Spring Public Speaking Tournament and three Middle School students placed in the top five overall - Addison Thorpe ’25 placed 4th, Sofia Nunez ’25 placed 2nd and Vikashni Ragunathan ‘25 won 1st place. In the Senior Division, Christina de Kock ‘23 placed 3rd and Hailey O’Donnell ‘21 placed 2nd overall. In the National Debate Competition, Middle School Team A, consisting of Varshini Srinivasan ‘25, Anne-Camille Haziza ’25 and Helena Thomas ‘25 had to battle BHS Team B of Nadia Gibson ‘26, Robin Selley ’26 and Kalea Walker ’26 for the win!
The BHS Innovation Centre won The Bermudian Magazine’s 27th Annual Building and Interior Design Award, in the category of Commercial Building and Commercial Interior Design.
Charlotte Millington ‘25, Elyse Dej ‘25 and Lizzie Wyer ‘25 joined over 1000 students from 16 countries for the third annual Miami Youth Climate Summit. The online event included presentations and talks from leading climate change educators, politicians and activists.
The first-ever BHS Scavenger Hunt saw over 50 families take part. It was a great success as over $2,500 was raised for the new Primary Playground fund. Everyone had a lot of fun and learned about BHS history while they raced the clock for points. Alumna, Rachel Barritt ’93, wrote the clues and is already planning the next one!
Various Secondary classes visited the “Shoah: Understanding the Holocaust Through Art & Artifacts” exhibit organised by the Jewish Community of Bermuda at the Bermuda Society of the Arts at City Hall. It was an amazing opportunity for students to broaden their understanding and perspective of this period in history.
As the only Round Square Member School in Bermuda, Round Square Day is a chance for Secondary students to celebrate both the connection to the other 200 member schools, from 50 countries, and the principles of the Round Square IDEALS – Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership & Service. This year, the theme was “Give More, Take Less”, with students focused on the idea of giving back whilst also considering how we share the planet and our need to examine and lessen our carbon footprint. Student leaders worked with staff on the planning for the day, which had to be changed at the last minute due to COVID restrictions!

As part of the Round Square Day activities, Year 7 and Year 8 students designed beautiful thank you cards with messages of gratitude for essential workers who have worked tirelessly over the last year. The cards were delivered to workers at vaccination and testing centres, as well as the Bermuda Regiment, the Fire Station and KEMH. Thank you to Butterfield & Vallis for their generous donation of chocolates for the goodie bags.
IB2 Art students held their Painter’s Palette show at Masterworks from March 5th – 16th.
On the last day of term, Secondary students voted to elect a new student leadership team for the 2021-22 school year. Kristy Sanchez and Ariadne Ward were elected as new Head Students, and the four Deputy Head Students are Christina de Kock, Sierra DeSousa, Laura Hupman and Marli Spriggs.
