School Reports SUMMER 2020
Rhiannon Higgins ‘20, Paisley Garside ‘24 and Kate O’Keefe ’27 were nominated for the 2020 Denton Hurdle Awards from a group of 61 of Bermuda’s finest Primary, Middle and Senior school student-athletes.
Harmony Seymour ’26 won the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Emancipation Youth Creativity Competition for her creative video entry that described what freedom means to her.
SEPTEMBER
BHS won overall 1st prize in the Secondary Category and overall 1st prize in the Middle School category for the Mirrors Annual Junior Art Competition held at Masterworks over the Summer.

BHS held its first-ever Drive-Through Fish Fry and live-streamed the much anticipated 2020 BHS Raffle Draw.
OCTOBER Year 11 Geography students investigated the effectiveness of coastal defences at Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve and examined the impact of recent hurricanes. Students carried out beach profiles, questionnaires, environmental quality surveys, field sketches and photography and measured longshore drift and wave frequency.
STEAM education in action! Year 8 students were tasked with creating a truss bridge from an existing design, adapting one, or creating their own. They tested the bridges to breaking point and evaluated their work. The girls used the
During Global Enterprise Month, 12 Year 9 students took part in the Youth Rocket Pitch Challenge. Of the 11 teams entered Island-wide, BHS girls made up five of those teams! The ‘Bermuda Volunteers’, made up of Moya van Niekerk and Lore de Kock, not only placed 1st in the overall competition (winning $5,000), but also won the ‘People’s Choice Award’ by a landslide, garnering 50% of the votes.
Year 11 students received invaluable information from Ms Dingley- Jones on the process of applying to top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Yale. This was a wonderful use of the new Leadership Room with the leaders of tomorrow looking to their futures!
BHS’ first-ever Innovation Expo, which was held in February 2020, earned 2nd place in The Most Innovative Youth Category at the 2020 Tech Awards.
Hailey O’Donnell ‘21, Linnea Kuruvilla ‘21 and Christina de Kock ‘23 took part in the virtual International Independent School Public Speaking Competition. Hailey placed 3rd in the After Dinner Speaking category.
A huge thanks to BHS parents Ingrid Boyd, Rebecca Johnston, Becky Flynn and Bridget Clammer who donated their time and talent over the October break to paint a beautiful mural on the front of Curling Cottage.
