Natural Structure for Giving T

he molecular structure of carbon, beehive cells and dragonfly eye lenses all have something in common – the hexagon. The six-sided shape is found throughout nature and is also very popular in man-made designs because of its dense packing ability.

It was therefore the perfect choice when designing the donor walls in the Innovation Centre. It was it the most efficient shape for the more than 300 donors’ names to be displayed, and also connected directly into the purpose of the building – STEAM Education.

The primary goal of a donor wall is to express gratitude for, and recognition of, the generosity of those who gave. The two-storey walls at the entrance of the Innovation Centre gave an architecturally interesting canvas for which to accomplish this, in a way that also created visual interest to enhance the interior of the building.

The Leadership Gifts wall displays 12- inch hexagons with metallic facings which were placed in an organic honeycomb pattern and recognize donors who gave at least $100,000. Different metals designate each giving tier and each of the five tiers also has a different depth, with those gifts of $1M or above coming 3 inches away from the wall, adding a sculptural effect.

The second wall displays gifts from $1000 to $75,000 and the plates on this wall are 7-inches in diameter with acrylic faces in six different colours. These hexagons are also placed at different depths and fill almost the entire column, just like healthy bees do in a beekeeper’s hive. The different colours (all within the new BHS branding guidelines) brighten up the otherwise industrial feel of the finishings and both walls add light and colour as you enter the Innovation Centre and ascend the staircase to the Science Labs.

Local sign designers, Signworx, worked closely with Campaign Chair, Pamela Ferreira P’23 and American Friends of BHS President, Jennifer Burland Adams ’95, P’23, with early and important input from Immediate Past Board Chair Mariette Savoie P’06, ‘08, ‘11, Trustee Germano Botelho P’20 and the Opening Committee.
