Revealing Our Resilience Welcome

go down in the history books. W

Here we are, a year after the Pandemic officially began, with a new Torchbearer that is filled with school and alumni news. As we look to the Summer with a sense of hope for brighter days ahead, I reflect back on a remarkable year which has brought much change and uncertainty to our lives but also a renewed appreciation for the connections which bind us. I have no doubt that over this past year, it is your BHS friendships that have sustained you through tough times. We have been saddened that we have not been able to welcome alumni to the campus in over a year and have now had to cancel two Torch Ceremonies. It is only perhaps when we cannot gather, that we fully realise the importance of these traditions. It is my wholehearted hope that next year we will be able to welcome everyone for the 2022 Torch Ceremony and hold a big celebration!

In the meantime, I hope that you enjoy this issue, which is filled with all the wonderful things that have been happening around school since September. The school day looks different with many new rules in place, but what has not changed is the enthusiasm of our students, the passion of our teachers and the dynamic learning environment that I see every day. The new Innovation Centre has become the heart of the School. Students are thriving in the new spaces, and the creativity and joy for learning that it fosters is a wonder to behold.

I am pleased to welcome our new Director of Advancement, Britt Call, who joined us in March. Mrs Call is a Development professional who recently moved back to Bermuda, after spending nearly 10 years living in Buffalo, N.Y. She has previously worked in Advancement offices at museums and cultural heritage nonprofits, and we are excited to have her join Shelby Rodrigues in the Advancement Office.

I would also like to welcome our new Board Chair, Cece Powell ‘85 who has taken over from Mariette Savoie P’06, ‘08, ‘11 who served as Board Chair from 2014- 2020. Cece has held the position of Chief Communications Officer at Partner Re since 2005 and served on the BHS Board of Trustees in numerous capacities from 2006-2014. She served as Deputy Chair from 2010-2014. During her Board tenure, she was the Chair of the Advancement Committee, the Chair of the Inclusion Committee and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee. We are thrilled that she has decided to return to her alma mater as Board Chair. We are also pleased to welcome several new Board members: Jennie Lee O’Donnell P’17,’18, ‘21; Sally Penrose P’30; Richard Porter P’24 and Ben Wright P’31, ‘33.

Please enjoy this issue of the Torchbearer. Stay safe and well, we hope to see you soon.

elcome to the Spring Issue of the BHS Torchbearer Magazine. The last time I penned a letter for the magazine was in the Fall of 2019 and much has changed since then. Our last magazine was a virtual edition, created in the Summer of 2020, after a school year that will
