rom the outset, the Leading the Way campaign identified the Arts, or the A in STEAM, as an integral part of the School’s curriculum and the design of the new facilities. While the newly constructed Innovation Centre houses the Science and Technology spaces, the building is seamlessly connected to the renovated Butterfield Building with its expanded Art and Music facilities, while the old Primary gymnasium has been converted into The Alvin Fereira Theatre for the Drama Department.
The Arts Wing consists of two specialist Art suites, a gallery space, an IB Art studio, a digital lab and a ceramics area. “Design is about solving problems whereas Art is about asking questions and this openness and creativity permeates through all of the cross- disciplinary projects that we run at BHS,” says Secondary Art Teacher, Rachel Swinburne. “Having the Arts wing connected to the Innovation

Centre reminds us that imagination is key in finding ways to realise new ideas and inspire creativity in all that we do in other areas of the curriculum.” She also says the students are making great use of the extra space both in and out of their regular class times, often using the facilities in their free
time. Additionally, there is a greater scope for working on a larger scale and incorporating Technology. “Students are increasingly working digitally on our drawing tablets and we have many budding photographers who are getting to grips with the DSLR cameras in manual mode! We have two
