The Deer rises again
It’s been almost 15 years since you could last get a pint drawn from the wood and sold by the pound at The Rising Deer in Brampton en-le Morthen.
At one time, the historic building was even faced with demolition. But thanks to local publican, Ian Wild, this well-loved watering hole has been given a new lease of life.
Previously of the Robin Hood at Aughton, Ian’s latest project is his final swansong, so to speak, and he’s definitely going out with a bang. Many will have fond childhood memories of The Rising Deer, getting pop and crisps from the little hatch in the doorway, or hours spent on the playground opposite while parents socialised. The shop might have gone, but those memories can once again be recreated with younger generations at the pub that has been lovingly restored for the 21st century.
Set within a conservation area, Ian and his team have worked hard to retain the history of the building while refurbishing it to an exceptionally high standard. Everything except the original shell of the building is new, including an extension which now houses the kitchen and toilet facilities. The décor is comfortable with a country chic
edge, and you’ll be fawning over the statement glass roof which adds a contemporary touch and floods the bar with natural light.
The Rising Deer is independently owned, so with no brewery to answer to, Ian has been able to expand his range of premium beers and lagers for which he is renowned for. Along with John Smiths, Theakstones, Amstel and Birra Morreti, they also have Beavertown Neck Oil IPA and Old Mout cider on draught – perfect for summer drinking on the new courtyard beer garden, a real suntrap to seat 60 people. For the first time in its history, food can be enjoyed at The Rising Deer. Three local chefs have devised a menu which plays to Ian’s long- established background in fish and chips. Again, Ian is proud to work with other local businesses; the milk and cream will be supplied by the dairy farm down the road, the meat will come from the farm shop in the neighbouring village, and the fresh fish from a fishmonger who Ian has used for almost 40 years.
