SHOP LOCAL Funding Boost Town Centre Artist’s impression

Thanks to a double boost from government-backed funding, Rotherham town centre’s ambitious regeneration plans are forging ahead.

Earlier this summer, it was confirmed that Rotherham Council’s bids for both the Future High Streets Fund and Towns Fund had been approved, bringing in over £40 million in funding to help deliver various projects across the town centre. Rotherham is one of 57 town centres in the UK to have been awarded public funds as part of the Future High Streets Fund, for which the

town has received £12.6 million. The government has set aside £675m to renew and reshape town centres and high streets in a way that drives growth, improves experience and ensures future sustainability.

This pot of money will go towards the redevelopment of the historic market which will also incorporate a new central library. Architects have been appointed and are currently drawing up plans ready to be submitted later this year. Rotherham’s children’s literacy charity, Grimm and Co, will also benefit from the Future High Streets Fund as they begin their transformation of the former Talbot Lane Church on Ship Hill into a magical new lair for creative writing workshops. Improving the town’s open spaces is another part of the plan, with works already happening throughout the town. If you’ve walked up and down High Street recently, you’ll have noticed the former Primark building has now been demolished, with the next step to bring in landscapers to create the Pocket Park. Demolition of the former Riverside Precinct has also begun as work gets underway to open up the views of the river, Rotherham Minster

and wider town centre, and make way for the new Riverside Gardens at Forge Island. As well as the Future High Streets Funding, the council has also received one of the largest awards, £31.6 million, from the government’s £3.6 billion Towns Fund. Rotherham was one of 101 areas invited to produce a Town Investment Plan for economic growth, in order to access up to £25m of government funding, with the possibility of additional funds for exceptional and particularly credible plans.

The plan will focus on a number of schemes delivered over the next five years, including the redevelopment of the historic Guest and Chrimes building by the New York Stadium to include more leisure facilities. Also set for transformation are the derelict heritage buildings on Corporation Street. Other projects will include the development of a residential quarter by the riverside in the town, creating new and improved housing at Eastwood, as well as rejuvenating aspects of the business community at Templeborough.
