If you’re looking for a unique destination in which to indulge, socialise and discover new tastes this summer, you don’t need to travel far.
For tucked away behind
Rotherham High Street there sits a spectacular grade II listed building that has been lovingly restored to create the luxury George Wright boutique hotel, bar and restaurant. With its elegant Tudor revival architecture, character and charm, the building dates back to the early 16th Century when it served as offices for stove and fireplace manufacturers, George Wright & Co. It was gutted by a fire in the 1990s before a lengthy restoration programme began in 2013. And last December, Mark Casson and Darren Hughes, who own nearby Fitzwilliam and Hughes
coffee shop, took over the ownership to begin writing the next chapter in the building’s history. Along with luxury
accommodation, the star of the show at George Wright is the food. Head chef, Tom Briggs, and his talented team have devised a plethora of dishes for the two dining experiences on offer. Perfect for light lunches with co-workers or more informal family dinners, dine alfresco in the glass pergola with retractable roof that houses the GW Courtyard restaurant. Here you can enjoy waffles, French toast or pancakes for lazy weekend brunches, salads, sandwiches and small plates at lunch, or more traditional dishes like homemade pie or fish and chips in the evening. For more sumptuous dinner dates, head down to the Milton; an a la carte restaurant with white linens and silver service. With views of the open kitchen, the Milton also leads out onto a charming courtyard area. The Milton menu boasts a range of refined dishes throughout the day. A flavour of the evening menu includes venison tartare or Coquille St Jacques scallops for starters, and lobster thermidor or confit duck leg for mains.
Long summer nights call for drinks in the evening sun and what better place to relax than in the mini- hat tepee covered courtyard with views overlooking the Minster.
