HEALTH & BEAUTY

Sun safety over style

Sunnier days are on their way so it’s time to dig out the sunglasses.

But do yours provide the best possible UV protection, or are they just a fashion accessory? When buying sunglasses, it’s vital to remember the health benefits of shaded lenses as well as finding the right style of frame. Only 40 percent of us wear sunglasses to protect our eyes, and a further 30 percent are unaware of the damage UV rays can have on eyes, such as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, corneal sunburn, retinal tissue damage, eye strain and headaches.

Always check UV levels before buying. The minimum should be UV 400 protection, which blocks nearly 100 percent of the sun’s harmful ultra-violet rays (both UVA and UVB). Don’t assume all sunglasses provide this level of protection, even if a sticker says, ‘blocks UV’. All

sunglasses sold in the UK should have a CE mark to indicate compliance with regulatory standards, blocking out 95 percent of all UV rays below 380 nanometres.

It's also important that that you can see clearly whilst wearing sunglasses so the best place to start is your opticians. If you haven’t had an eye test in the past 12 months, you may now need prescription sunglass lenses or specialist coatings or lenses. Polarised lenses can reduce glare from sunlight which can be dangerous and distracting, especially when driving. Tinted lenses help maintain clarity, contrast and colour protection by reducing distortion and muting the sun’s brightness, while light adaptive (photochromic) lenses mean you don’t have to swap between glasses and sunglasses when indoor and out.
