Flowers that are – and Mother nature

Roses are red and violets are blue, but have you ever thought about their environmental impact, too?

The first reaction when buying or receiving flowers isn’t always what effect the beautiful bouquet has had on the planet. Yet with mass importation, use of

harmful pesticides, high energy consumption, and soaring volume of waste, the floristry industry comes at a great price to the environment. But with the help of The Garden of Evie, a few small changes to your habits can mean you too can enjoy captivating blooms while working to reduce your floral carbon footprint. Run by climate conscious flower grower and qualified florist, Hannah Jackson, The Garden of Evie only uses sustainable British flowers in their bouquets and displays, with most stems, plants and foliage handpicked fresh from their cutting garden in Rotherham.

Grown with care not chemicals, The Garden of Evie is a pesticide- free zone, with Hannah working around the clock to keep on top of weeding, planting and watering. Her patch is filled with smaller quantities of interesting and less commercially utilised varieties which have been chosen to add a mix of

good for your soul

textures, shapes and sensational scents to all of their bespoke designs. Working with nature’s calendar, Hannah uses the best of what’s in season to create an ever-changing range of floaty and whimsical designs incorporating country garden favourites like peonies, sweet William, delphiniums, foxgloves and alliums. Her displays are rustic and untamed, often having herbs and grasses added into them to amplify the sensory experience. Not only do they smell and look great, but flowers also evoke feelings and memories of loved ones, forgotten childhoods, or a certain place in time. Whether you’re looking for a floral farewell or a celebratory bunch, Hannah will work with you to choose flowers that symbolise those relationships and emotions for a truly personal touch. She’s even been known to add vegetables into designs for farmers and feathers for gamekeepers.

Flowers at a funeral are a beautiful way to say goodbye to someone and celebrate their life and capture their personality. Her tributes range from understated hand-tied sheaths to softer casket sprays or even dried flower garlands, all of which are made to biodegrade into the earth to complete the circle of life. Many people are also opting for living planters, whereby more traditional stems are entwined around bedding plants which can be replanted after the funeral in their memory to be enjoyed in the garden for years to come.

Whatever the occasion, The Garden of Evie is passionate about their use of natural materials and Hannah has made a conscious effort to retrain using eco-friendly techniques, such as replacing traditional foam oasis and plastic with alternatives such as chicken wire, moss and twine to be kinder to mother nature.
