Jagger was a tough nut to crack. While there were

setbacks, the family was committed to helping their dog succeed. “With training, whenever there is a setback, and frustra-

tion sets in with both the family and the dog, we simply regroup,” said Victoria. “Adding something fun is always a healthy diversion for everyone.” As Jagger became more obedient, and Victoria felt com-

fortable that his manners were in place, she added more impulse training to the program. Excite him, then give him a command to drop, go-to-place and stay. “It’s all about impulse control,” said Victoria. “We’re always working with the basics, while adding more challenges. If you have a high level of control, the dog will have a low level of excitement. Repetition on the part of the family is key.” During the final formal session of Jagger’s training, the

family expressed to Victoria how thrilled they were with the results. The grandmother, who was initially the focus of Jagger’s wrath, had developed a strong bond with him, thanks to a few dog tricks Victoria introduced them to. Brushing her granddaughter’s hair has become enjoyable again. They some- times spend additional time braiding it and adding a bow. All the while, Jagger is calmly sitting with them in the same room. The grandmother showers Jagger with attention using positive reinforcement, praising him for his good behavior, and letting him know everything is okay. Jagger is a very intelligent dog and that was part of his

problem. He wasn’t being mentally-stimulated or challenged. Now, he was enjoying training. “And, I was surprised, but he also loved seeing me,” said

Victoria. “After all, I had really turned his world upside down, coming in and being all bossy. Now, it was clear that he was enjoying our sessions together.” ONE LAST LESSON BEFORE MOVING ON Before leaving, the family asked Victoria to help them

with walking Jagger outside. “He was becoming a little reactive with other dogs during their walks,” said Victoria. “So, we fine-tuned the method. I demonstrated how to keep Jagger’s shoulder next to my knee. Then I handed the leash to the wife.” As they approached a neighbor’s home with three

barking dogs, Victoria gave instructions to Jagger’s handler to completely ignore the distraction. “She had been anticipating the barking dogs and was about to head the other way. I told her to reinforce the commands with Jagger. Have confidence. And it worked.” Jagger’s family has seen a complete change in him.

Victoria reminded them that there was also a complete change in the whole family dynamics. Everyone was involved with helping Jagger succeed. There are still times when he displays unwanted behavior, but now they know how to deal with and manage the situation. “They’re confident they now have the skills and knowledge to keep moving forward,” said Victoria. Whenever Jagger is feeling overwhelmed, he has learned

to simply goes to his place on his own. “Place is a calming command,” said Victoria. “Not a form of punishment.”
