St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) opened another new amenity for travelers. The new Bark Parks are fenced artificial turf pet relief areas for dogs. The two Bark Parks have benches, hydration sta- tions, trash receptacles, and dog waste bags. In addition to the increase of people traveling with their dogs and greeters arriving at the airport with their dogs, the airport has a therapy dog program partnership with Project PUP (Pets Uplifting People). The therapy dog encounters are intended to ease travel stress. The airport also hosts Southeastern Guide Dogs pup- pies in tours of the airport to help with their socialization skills while they are in puppy training.

Protective Armour For St. Pete PD K-9 Unit
Thanks to a generous donation by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., the St. Petersburg Police Department’s K9s are a little safer. Three dogs, K9s Johnny, Bane and Stark, each received bullet and stab protective vests, valued between $1,744 and $2,283, and weigh- ing an average of four to five pounds. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide the vests to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies in the United States. Meet Aero Another Team Effort
Aero is currently “enrolled” in Southeastern Guide Dogs (SEGD) preschool puppy train- ing program. He recently went home with his volunteer puppy raiser who will be spending the next year teaching Aero basic obedience and house manners. After staff from Air Animal Pet Movers toured the SEGD’s Palmetto campus, and attended a “Beyond the Dark” program, they were inspired to support the service dog program by sponsoring a puppy. Sponsorship oppor- tunities come with the privilege of naming the puppy. Aero is the perfect name from a company that has been expertly moving family pets around the world since 1977.

More airports are building pet relief stations for those travel- ing with their dogs. Gone are the days when leaving the terminal was the only option to finding a place for a traveler’s dog to do his business. The “Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Disability in Air Travel” mandate requires airports with 10,000 or more annual passen- gers to provide convenient, indoor, wheelchair-accessible pet-relief areas for service ani- mals. Miami International Airport was the first interna- tional airport in South Florida to add indoor pet relief areas. Chicago’s Midway International Airport converted an old family restroom into a dog relief sta- tion, complete with artificial turf, poop bags and the prover- bial mini fire hydrant. The Wooftop at New York City’s JFK International Airport is adjacent to JetBlue’s rooftop lounge. It is open to all airline passengers and pets.
