It was important to the Duncans that Sadie always be com-

fortable with traveling. Acclimating her to boat and air travel took time, training and patience. “Sadie was quite nervous about the boat,” said David. “We

regrouped and told her we were just going to take a walk to the dock. Then, we progressed to sitting on the boat. Once she seemed comfortable with that phase, we cruised out just a cou- ple hundred yards and came back. Each time, we cruised just a little farther. Now, Sadie is the first one on the boat and the last one off.” There are several sandbars off Palm Island and Sadie loves

jumping off the boat, into the water to swim around. The couple, who also own a small airplane, used the same

training techniques to make sure Sadie was comfortable before taking their first flight with her. “The first time, Nancy and Sadie just sat in the plane,”

explained David. “Our second visit to the plane, we pulled out of the hangar and started the plane. Sadie wasn’t nervous at all. So, we decided to take the plane up, and she became extremely nervous.” They took into consideration the noise factor on a small

plane as one source of Sadie’s discomfort. David researched and found the best travel headphones for her, called Mutt Muffs, designed specifically for dogs to protect their ears during flight travel. “Our third time up in the plane with Sadie wearing the

Mutt Muffs was much better,” said David. “She just looked out the window and seemed so surprised at the clouds going by.” Between driving, boating and flying, Sadie has become

quite the experienced traveler. “We enjoy hiking and always pick trails that are dog-friendly,” said David. “Her favorite thing is smelling everything during the hikes.” Sadie has been more than a welcome distraction during the

difficult year that 2020 became. She is a very affectionate dog, slipping in a French kiss or two while licking Nancy's face. She’ll jump up and sit on David’s chest for attention, hugs and petting, noticeably relaxing him.
