For the next couple of days, the staff went above and beyond to make sure that we were enjoying ourselves and that we had all that we needed. Recommendations were made for places to go and see. Our meals at the hotel were perfection with the Food Services Manager coming to check on us and introducing him- self to Dexter. Our waiter, Rick, brought Dexter a bowl of water along with the waters he provided for us and snuck Dexter a few pieces of bacon because, well, who can turn down bacon? Guests at the Barbary Beach House will enjoy exclusive
amenities like a lagoon-style pools, access to Smathers Beach, an offsite restaurant, lawn games, poolside yoga, and water sports rentals.
Carol’s husband, Tracy, is also Dexter’s best friend. I was so pleasantly surprised and perfectly gleeful of how
well Dexter did on this trip. So, it is possible with proper prepa- ration for a reactive dog to travel well. A little thought ahead of time on how best to set yourself up for success and avoid those triggers that make your dog lose his mind will go a long way. Leave the retractable leashes behind and use a shorter leash to prevent your pup from lunging or getting too far away from you in order to keep everyone safe. Put some distance between them and things that usually make them react such as other dogs, children, bicycles, etc. Bring treats and treat them more than usual when they handle things well or when they listen to commands. By doing so, they will want to repeat such good behaviors. To the Barbary Beach House staff, Amy, Reed, Rick,
Oksana – keep doing what you are doing. You are incredibly welcoming and attentive to your guests, even the furry ones. Dogs know good humans when they see them and that helps make everyone’s stay more enjoyable. For me, a friend to my Dexter is a friend to me. Thank you.
