ALL ABOUT FITNESS

S M A R T S T A T Since lockdown started,

34%

of Brits have started a home exercise programme to make sure they stay fit and healthy2

Active 12 3 WALKING

Walking is cheap and accessible to most of us, and it stimulates your heart, lungs and circulation while boosting your leg and hip muscles.

Try listening to music or a podcast while you walk – it can make exercising more fun. Also add some variety to your walks by changing your route every now and then (though make sure you’re following the latest government advice to stay safe – find out more at gov.uk/coronavirus).

RUNNING AND JOGGING

Like walking, running is free and you can do it almost anywhere – all you need is a decent pair of running shoes.

Running can boost your mood, help you manage your weight and reduce your risk of conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Start slowly if you’re new to it – try using the NHS Couch to 5K app, which is designed for beginners (available free from iTunes and Google Play).

CYCLING

Cycling works your lower body and cardiovascular system, plus it can be convenient if you’re trying to avoid using public transport. Just remember to follow the Highway Code and use the relevant safety equipment (including a helmet).

42 . at home

More people than ever are working out at home and by themselves these days. Thankfully there are plenty of non-gym options available to help you to improve your health and fitness.

STAYING AT HOME

If you don’t want to – or can’t – go outdoors to exercise there are plenty of options to get you working out in the comfort of your own home, including:

• Workout DVDs

• Online workouts (from subscription-based streamed services to free workouts on YouTube)

• Workout apps (browse iTunes or Google Play to find an app to suit you)

• Fitness video games (including dance games and sports)

Exercise is vital for our mental and physical health, and is arguably more important than ever1
