ALL ABOUT HEALTH

ULCERS (MOUTH)

Painful little sores inside the mouth, often on the inside of the cheeks, mouth ulcers are normally harmless but can be uncomfortable.

j Several products are available at pharmacies that may help, including mouthwashes, painkilling sprays and corticosteroid lozenges.

DID YOU KNOW?

Most mouth ulcers may be harmless but a long- lasting one can sometimes be a sign of mouth cancer. If you’re not sure, get it checked.

U VERRUCAS

Verrucas are small areas of hard skin on your feet that aren’t harmful, but they can be itchy and painful. Without treatment they can take months or years to disappear.

j Your pharmacist can recommend creams, plasters and sprays that get rid of verrucas. Always wash your hands after touching a verruca and cover them with a plaster if you go swimming.

WIND

Passing wind is normal. For relief try eating smaller meals, chewing your food more slowly and avoid chewing gum.

j Speak to your pharmacist if wind is causing problems, as they can recommend over-the- counter medicines that may be helpful.

Z 2. NHS.uk 18 XEROSIS

Xerosis is another word for dry skin.

j If your skin is dry your pharmacist can recommend gentle moisturising products as well as mild cleansing products that you can use instead of soap. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids – around six to eight glasses each day2

. YEAST INFECTIONS

Also called candidiasis, these are infections caused by a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida. Thrush is a common yeast infection and is usually harmless.

j Find out more about vaginal thrush and how your pharmacist can help on page 47.

ZITS (ACNE)

Most people have acne at some point, with symptoms including spots, blackheads and oily skin.

j Ask your pharmacist about over-the-counter acne gels and creams if your spots are mild. If you have more severe and long-lasting acne you may need prescription treatments.
