Around Kingswear BY MIKE TREVORROW
Remember the Dining Room?
You may be fortunate enough to have a room in your house or flat called the Dining Room. Ha! The name suggests a room used for eating things. Ha, I say again, you should be so lucky! Ours hasn’t seen food since the old king died; it has slept one or two people, it has been an artist’s studio but mainly it has become a sweat-shop churning-out scrubs for the medics, masks for the same, masks for the police, masks for the needy public, masks for the family, masks for other peoples’ families, masks for other peoples’ dogs ....... you get the picture. Serious congratulations to my
wonderful wife who has been the machinist here, bless her and countless others who have worked so hard to produce these items, items which really ought to have been in storage in preparation for a coming pandemic, but let’s not get bogged down in that matter!
Masks Now that there is some easing of Covid restrictions it is imperative that we take care, because risks are still there. With that in view please note that the post office has a number of masks which it can give out to those who need them. These are free and have been made locally, so please ask for a mask even if you cannot see them on display.
Village Help Since many of us in Kingswear are at a ‘vulnerable’ age as far as Covid19 is concerned it has
been most heartening to see the help that has been offered. The parish council has been organising volunteers to go to peoples’ homes to get shopping, fetch medications and the like. Manna from Devon have done a sterling service in baking super bread on Wednesdays and pizzas on Saturday evenings and their lockdown pages have amused and informed us all and got us cooking. The post office and the shop
have stayed open, offering delivery services to those in need, other traders like those in Totnes have got themselves together to collect all sorts of foodstuffs to deliver in Kingswear and surrounding area through Luscombes the butchers. John Kelly has brought lovely
fish round on a Tuesday, Zanne has cooked Sunday lunches for folk and delivered crab to many who could not get it for themselves. The Ship has been open in the evenings for take- away food and drinks, Moor at 13 and The Kingswear Coffee Co. have been offering take-away services as well. I am sure there will be others who I haven’t heard of yet, so if you have been missed-out please feel yourself included in very warm thanks to you all from many of us in Kingswear.
