48 K Fitness fix
aye Cowley is a Fitness Pilates Instructor. Usually she runs her classes in person at Kingswear
Village Hall, but she’s been doing them online since the fifth day of lockdown. “I was a bit nervous about doing exercises in front of a screen and I needed a few people to help me get it up and running, but I was soon well away!” She uses Zoom to lead two HIIT sessions a week (High Intensity Interval Training which is a form of cardiovascular exercise) and two Fitness Pilates sessions. Each ‘Kitchen Class’ is 45 minutes long and up to 39 people log on for each session. Kaye says usually she would have music, so everyone has had to get used to hearing a large dose of her voice! “I keep the work- outs quite professional, only talking about the moves themselves and what each one is designed to do in terms of building core, strength, cardio and balance. However, if members fancy a

social wind down afterwards there is a chance for a coffee and a chat during a follow-on Zoom call.” She says the only downside she has found so far is that she doesn’t get her little ‘rest moments’ she enjoys in class when she gets up to walk around and help members! “If I got up and wandered about
during the Zoom class they’d just be looking at my kitchen!” Kaye charges less than half price for the
online lessons but says it’s worth it as it helps keep her hand in and brings in a small income at this difficult time. Her members say it provides them with a focal point and something to look forward to each week. She says Zoom is a great platform for her type of business and she thinks the way things are looking she will continue to teach online for some months to come. •
