A couple of weeks after we started breadmaking, we opened as a Saturday night woodfired pizza takeaway. The menu is sent out on Fridays, orders taken and pickup times agreed to allow for social distancing and calm production. Again this has been a lovely way to catch up with lots of Kingswearites as they come for their takeaway and has been a great way to practise our own pizza production skills for when our woodfired cooking classes start again. Like most people, we didn’t really have much of an idea of Zoom pre-lockdown but it’s now entered the nation’s vocabulary. We’ve used it for family crossword and catch-ups over Sunday morning coffee but also to run some private teaching sessions for woodfired cooking and breadmaking. Challenges for that have been dodgy internet connections so some sessions have had to move to Whatsapp. Also one cooking session coincided with the first planes flying again over west London where our students lived so unexpected noise pollution to contend with along with their young children’s blood sugars dropping at the end of the lesson and needing their supper NOW!! Like most people we’ve had a good clear out – ours
being to get rid of an excess of cast iron pots and pans that we’ve collected over the years. We put these up on our website to our woodfired cooking subscribers

as a virtual car boot sale and sold out within an hour. I can see another one happening once we get to collect some more! We’ve also taken on our own filming for our Youtube channel. Previously this was all done in collaboration with the Really Good Media Company in Staverton who would come every quarter, film David cooking and send us the videos for final editing. My, how they made it look easy....! Our filming has been fine, however, the whole editing process is a completely different world of challenges. If I’ve learnt nothing it’s that computer programmes are written by nerds for nerds and they really need a normal person to act as an interface before they sell it to the real world. Or is that just me??! So an editing session means 3 hours or so in front of the
computer screen, talking myself through it, cursing lightly (or not so much) and referring to Youtube for guidance followed by yet another calming dog walk, as long as I can find the dog. Now we’re looking ahead to the 4th
July, still waiting
for definitive guidelines but reopening with our outdoor woodfired classes; smaller classes of real people with more online classes for virtual students in the pipeline. We’re looking forward to seeing Dartmouth and Kingswear come back to life after lockdown and wishing everyone a successful summer.
