24 D AR TMOUTH REC O VER Y PLAN Respect, Protect, Discover

Cllr Cathy Campos, Chair of the Dartmouth Town Council’s Communications Working Group is leading efforts to help local businesses recover from the economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis.

D

artmouth Town Council in partnership with Devon County Council and South Hams District Council, has formed the Dartmouth Recovery

Forum and has been working together with tourism organisations and local business representatives to create a town recovery plan. Our goal has been to support local businesses enabling them to open safely in accordance with government guidelines. In addition, we will be actively promoting Dartmouth as a premium visitor destination; so that when the town can welcome overnight visitors they are aware of everything our beautiful town can offer. It is vital for the town’s economy that we attract as many visitors as we can safely accommodate for the remainder of this year. We should also look ahead to the 2021 season when hopefully the town can look forward to a more “normal” season. Dartmouth Mayflower 400 will continue to build on their work actively promoting the town throughout the travel trade and working with businesses to create appealing packages.

As the town starts to open it would be wonderful

It is vital for the town’s economy that we attract as many visitors as we can safely accommodate for the remainder of this year.

if residents and second homeowners could support our local shops by not spending online, but instead seeing what is on offer here. Ordering a takeaway is a treat that will ensure a local restaurant or pub can keep ticking over until they can open more fully - so wherever possible, please keep everything you spend as local as you can.

Current social distancing measures mean

that it is just not viable for restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs to open without the provision of additional outside seating. Wherever possible Dartmouth Town Council and South Hams District Council have relaxed outside trading restrictions. This means that, this summer, there will be al fresco dining on South Embankment and possibly Royal

Avenue Gardens. While this may not be a universally popular development, it means that several local businesses and many local jobs will be saved.

Residents and visitors are understandably cautious about the town opening up and so Discover Dartmouth has created the Respect, Protect, Discover Dartmouth campaign. www.discoverdartmouth.com We ask all visitors to respect our town by parking considerately, taking rubbish home and observing simple courtesies. Everyone should protect themselves and others by maintaining social distancing, following guidelines set by shops and washing hands as often as possible. We hope that visitors will enjoy discovering (or rediscovering) everything Dartmouth has to offer from vibrant vendors, tasty takeaways and everyday essentials set against the beautiful back drop of the River Dart.

Dartmouth Mayflower 400 activities are still going

ahead. Some like the three Mayflower trails are already live while other events have been deferred so that they can still be enjoyed by both residents and visitors.

Dartmouth is not alone in struggling to help every business while balancing the needs of residents and visitors. Difficult choices have had to be made, but one of the best things to come out of this crisis has been how everyone involved in the Forum has pulled together come up with a strategy to ensure Dartmouth emerges from the lockdown in the best shape possible. Everyone in involved in the group has freely shared their time, expertise and knowledge. Based on this and previous experience of Dartmouth’s wonderful community spirit, we believe Dartmouth will rise to the occasion, welcoming visitors, supporting local businesses and embracing the many changes COVID-19 has necessitated.

About the Dartmouth Recovery Forum: Members include Town Councillors, District Councillors, key stakeholders from Dartmouth Visitor Centre and Visit South Devon (who look after the Discover Dartmouth website), together with representatives from the harbour authority and various business sectors in the town.
