YOUR HELP please to ensure the Flavel returns as strong as ever!
T
he Flavel Arts Centre is a much-loved Dartmouth venue and is very much a central hub of the community. We have remained open since the
first day we welcomed customers 15 years ago in 2005. So, it is with great sadness that we have had to close temporarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our founders probably had many things on their minds that first day, but it is unlikely that they envisaged a situation such as this. However, we have been working extremely hard behind
the scenes to ensure that our popular venue opens its doors again. We have a strong and dedicated staff and a team of willing volunteers to ensure that everything will be in place to open safely. Our best estimate at this point, taking everything into consideration, is that our opening date may not be before 1st September. However, government guidance continues to be reviewed and it may allow us to aim for an earlier date. In the meantime, we have put together a vibrant online programme for you to enjoy. Visit our website to discover the wide range of items on offer:

developed and changed all of our lives significantly, the economic climate for Arts Centres was very bleak, and several other Arts Centres in Devon were already experiencing problems; indeed, some have sadly had to close. So, we are incredibly fortunate to still have the Flavel Centre providing a varied programme of events in Dartmouth and surrounding area. Now more than ever we have to work hard to strike a
delicate balance. Although we are a registered charity, we are self-supporting, and we do not rely on grants to keep afloat. The Flavel Friends’ contributions, as well as generous donations, and volunteers’ time all combine to underpin ticket sales.
At this difficult time, it would be a huge help if you
could you support us by becoming a Flavel Friend? Or if you are already a Friend, would you consider increasing your contribution? More information can be found on our website:
theflavel.org.uk/TheFlavel.dll/ SupportUs?SubPage=2 where you can download an application form. Once we re-open, if you bought tickets to at least one
extra event, it would be a valuable contribution towards getting The Flavel up and running again. Our Chairman, Peter Conisbee, commented on the present
“It is not until something is no longer available, that we realise how much we value it”
situation, “I’m not sure how you define this, but there is nothing like a crisis to bring out the best in people – and that is certainly the case here in Dartmouth. Covid 19 has definitely presented The Flavel with numerous challenges, both practical and financial, and I would like to say an enormous thank you to everyone for their support during the lockdown. If you care about The Flavel and you are not a member already, please consider joining Flavel Friends to help us get through this difficult time. We will be back, of this there is no doubt, and The Flavel that you all love and cherish will re-emerge before long, determined to provide the varied and entertaining programme of events that you have come to expect.” It is not until something is no longer available, that we realise how much we value it, and have taken it for granted in the past.
Our lives are poorer when we can’t come together with friends and family to watch a film, listen to music, take part in an activity or simply meet for a coffee and a chat. So, we will all need to pull together if we want the Flavel to remain at the heart of Dartmouth for another 15 years, and we hope to welcome you back as soon as we are able.
The Flavel Friends’ membership scheme is crucial as it generates essential funds We currently have around 700 members, but we now need to increase that membership. Annual contributions are only £20 for a single membership and £35 for a couple, although many supporters choose to increase that amount. As a Flavel Friend, you will receive a monthly newsletter, cinema programme and a live events programme in April, August and December. Other benefits are:
* Advanced programme information * Monthly lottery for Film and selected Live Events throughout the year * Priority waiting list for sold out events * Ticket refunds if your plans change
