GARDENING DIARY FOR OCTOBER & NOVEMBER with Avon Mill
In the Garden A
fter the fantastic summer weather this year - the cooler weather, shortening days and the hint of autumn in the air
may be a welcome change. The dry weather has certainly been a challenge for gardeners, but there’s still plenty of life in the gar- den and this is the best time to plant (shrubs, herbaceous plants, ornamental and fruit trees and soft fruit) because the soil is still warm and the rain should help out with watering!
Things to do in the garden ...
✿ Gather in the last of your har- vest (apples, pears, and nuts)
✿ Sow overwintering broad beans
✿ Last chance to plant autumn onion sets for an early crop next year
✿ Bulbs to flower in the spring need to be planted now. Ex- periment with different moods and colour combinations.
✿ Move tender plants to a frost free environment & cut down watering.
✿ Dig up outside tomatoes and hang them upside-down under cover to ripen…or use the green fruits for making chutney.
✿ Leave the roots of pea and bean plants in the soil and dig them in as they ad nitrogen into the soil.
✿ Plant containerised trees, the soil is still warm and more rain means less worry about keeping newly planted trees watered.
✿ Clear fallen leaves regularly and remove all plant debris from the vegetable patch to lessen the chance of pests and diseases overwintering.
✿ Plant up your pots and hanging baskets with col- our, to cheer you up through the winter. We have a selection of bedding plants, which will flower through the colder months, in a rainbow of colours and mini evergreens and trailing ivies to set them off. Under plant with bulbs to give you even more interest and another layer of flowers.
✿ Cut back perennials that have died down, and divide them if they are overcrowded.
